Venezia preview: Improved Venezia

Following their promotion to the top-flight last season, Venezia spent big in the summer but a disappointing start led to the departure of Giovanni Stroppa and the appointment of Serie A’s so-called ‘miracle worker’ Davide Nicola.

Nicola’s start in Venice began with a slender 1-0 defeat of Napoli about ten days or so ago before they were then edged out by a goal to nil at the Luigi Ferraris by Genoa due to a second half winner scored by Mikael Ellertsson.

Inter Milan preview: Still at the top

Internazionale come into this one on the back of a 2-1 defeat of Fiorentina in a game in which they trailed heading into second half stoppage-time but snatched the victory, with a Piotr Zielinski penalty sealing the win in the 98th minute.

The Nerazzurri begin the ninth match day of the campaign sitting at the top-of-the-table with seven victories and a draw thus far, above Lazio on goal difference, but there remains some pressure on Cristian Chivu.

Venezia team news: Nothing fresh

There are no fresh absentees for Venezia to deal with as Marin Sverko remains sidelined alongside Valencia loanee Thierry Correia as well as Bartol Franjic and Andrea Adorante.

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Stankovic; Halhal, Matias Moreno, Juan; Hainaut, Kike Perez, Sohm, Basic, Haps; John Yeboah, Adams

Unavailable: Sverko (Injured), Correia (Injured), Franjic (Injured), Adorante (Injured)

Questionable:

Inter Milan team news: A few injuries

Luis Henrique has been ruled out for Inter this midweek as he joins defenders John Stones and Benjamin Pavard, midfielder Curtis Jones and key striker Lautaro Martinez on the sidelines.

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Provedel; Bisseck, Akanji, Bastoni; Diouf, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Carlos Augusto; Thuram, Esposito

Unavailable: Stones (Injured), Pavard (Injured), Jones (Injured), Luis Henrique (Injured), L. Martinez (Injured)

Questionable:

Key stats

  • Inter have won the last four Serie A meetings with Venezia, and Venezia are winless in the last seven (D1 L6) since a 1-0 home win in October 1999.
  • Venezia have won two of their five Serie A home games against Inter (D1 L2), but have lost the last two at the Penzo without scoring (0-2 in 2021, 0-1 in January 2025).
  • The highest-scoring meeting was Inter's 6-2 win in January 1999, which is also the biggest win in the fixture.
  • Inter are top on goal difference with 22 points (W7 D1), equalling their best start after eight games since 1994/95 (also 22 in 1997/98, 2002/03 and 2017/18).
  • Inter have scored 23 goals, the most in Serie A, and their games have averaged 4.12 goals this season.
  • Inter are unbeaten in 18 Serie A games and have scored in every one of them. Their last league defeat was 0-1 to Milan on 8 March 2026.
  • Inter have won three in a row and have won all five of their home games this season, though they have conceded in their last two away games.
  • Venezia are bottom with three points (W1 L7). Their only win came against Napoli, 1-0 at home on 17 October.
  • Venezia have not won any of their last 30 Serie A away games, a run that started after a 2-1 win at Torino on 12 February 2022.
  • Venezia have lost nine of their last ten Serie A games and have scored more than once in only two of their eight games this season.
  • Inter have won 57 of their 84 Serie A games on a Wednesday (D16 L11) – a 67.9% win rate.

Venezia vs Inter Milan prediction

The pressure growing on Chivu is as a result of a faltering start to the UEFA Champions League once again and, like their game against Fiorentina, performances in Serie A have been fairly underwhelming and reliant on dramatic comebacks in the second half quite often. They remain the favourites for this one at Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo here but Venezia may well believe they can contain a stuttering Inter side.
