Josh Emmett: Does "CCO" still have what it takes to defend his spot in the rankings?

Widely regarded as one of the heaviest hitters in featherweight history, Josh Emmett (19-6) looks to be in the twilight of his career heading into his latest headlining spot on Saturday night. Renowned for murderous one-punch KOs over the likes of Bryce Mitchell, Michael Johnson, and Ricardo Lamas, Emmett has one of the scariest highlight reels in the entire promotion; he can actually wrestle, but typically eschews such practice in favour of attempting to nuke his opponent’s jaw into orbit. However, his one-dimensional approach means that he has been figured out with relative ease by the more elite fighters he’s faced throughout his career; Emmett is 1-4 dating back to 2023, coughing up decisive losses to  Yair Rodriguez, Ilia Topuria, Lerone Murphy, and most recently, Youssef Zalal.

Kevin Vallejos: "El Chino" looks to score another highlight and the biggest scalp of his young career

With an 82% finish rate across eighteen fights at the tender age of 24, only top featherweight contender, Jean Silva, has managed to walk away with a victory against surging prospect, Kevin Vallejos (17-1). Leveraging a striking style that has many comparing him to current P4P great, Ilia Topuria, the sky would appear to be the limit for “El Chino” given his youth and talent. Earning his way into the promotion at the second time of asking with a highlight reel stoppage on the Contender Series, Vallejos is already 3-0 with two finishes in the promotion, most recently disposing of Giga Chikadze with a spectacular TKO, decimating the Georgian with a hellacious spinning backfist and follow up elbows.

Josh Emmett vs Kevin Vallejos prediction

Emmett’s last fight against Youssef Zalal may well have signaled the end of his time as a top 10 level featherweight. “The Moroccan Devil” ran through “CCO” with consummate ease, taking absolutely no damage and walking away with an armbar victory in less than two minutes. As such, it’s hard to escape the notion that the UFC are feeding him to Vallejos in the hopes that “El Chino” scores a highlight reel victory over a well known name.

There’s a strong chance that’s exactly how this one plays out. Vallejos combines an extremely aggressive technical striking game with vicious KO power, methodically breaking down his opponents before unleashing a fight ending combo when he’s able to back them up against the fence. By contrast, Emmett’s offense these days doesn’t extend beyond winging five haymakers a round, loading up predictably in the hopes of landing a walk off KO blow.

Emmett is undoubtedly durable; he hasn’t been KO’d since Jeremy Stephens flatlined him back in 2018 and is one of only two men to survive to see the final bell against Ilia Topuria. With that being said, he’s also 41 and visibly declining with every minute he spends in the cage. Vallejos’ combination of speed, power, and durability seems tailor made to pick him apart on the feet before eventually landing the killer blow somewhere around the midway point of the fight.

Prediction: Kevin Vallejos to win by TKO
