Charles Johnson: Can "Inner G" kickstart another unlikely shot at the title?

KO victories over Lone’er Kavanagh and current flyweight kingpin, Joshu Van, had many labelling Charles Johnson (18-8) as a dark horse contender at flyweight heading into his last matchup against Alex Perez. Regrettably for “Inner G,” Perez would proceed to put belt to backside and leave Johnson on the wrong end of a first round TKO defeat; the first stoppage loss of his career. A perennially tough out at 125 pounds, the American is one of the biggest fighters that the weight class has to offer with legitimate one-punch KO power. A notorious slow starter, Johnson has the most success when he’s able to weather his opponents’ early storm, either turning the tide to win a comeback decision or blasting them with a fight ending strike as soon as their hands start to come down.

Bruno Gustavo da Silva: Will "Bulldog" score the biggest win of his UFC career to date?

Originally slated to face Lone’er Kavanagh, Bruno Silva (15-7-2, 1 NC) finds himself facing off against the only man to beat the English prospect instead come Saturday night. Best known for a four fight finish streak between 2021 and 2024 that earned him a Performance Bonus in each fight, “Bulldog” seems to have rebounded from a tough two fight skid that saw him face Manel Kape and Joshua Van back to back, cashing in with an impressive submission victory over Hyun Sung Park as a heavy underdog in his most recent appearance. One of the more grizzled veterans that flyweight has to offer, Silva blends some impressive pop in his fists with an underrated submission game to land as one of the tougher outs in the 125 pound division.

Charles Johnson vs Bruno Gustavo da Silva prediction

There’s a solid argument to be made that Silva is undervalued here. “Bulldog” may only be 3-2 across his last five, but those two defeats came against two of the division’s best fighters in Manel Kape and Joshua Van. Moreover, he’s earned a finish in each of his five most recent wins, proving that he’s still a problem for the division in his last outing after becoming the only man outside of Tatsuro Taira to beat Hyun Sung Park.

At his best, Johnson’s size and power makes him one of the toughest outs in the 125 pound shark tank, but he can be so unpredictable that it’s difficult to know which version of “Inner G” is going to show up; will it be the man who flatlined Lone’er Kavanagh and Joshua Van, or the one who dropped decisions to Cody Durden and Ode’ Osbourne? As well as the fact he’s taking this one on short notice, Johnson is only six weeks removed from a nasty TKO loss to Alex Perez; a sign that his relentless activity may be starting to catch up to him at the age of 35.

With that being said, Silva’s best chance to win this looks to be with with a murderous one-punch KO. “Inner G” may be coming off a TKO defeat, but it was the first time he’s ever been stopped in 26 professional fights. If this goes the full 15 minutes, Johnson is a better striker with a sizable reach advantage, meaning that it’s difficult to envision a reality where he doesn’t walk away with the decision.

Prediction: Charles Johnson to win
