Beatriz Mesquita: "The Lady GOAT" returns in search of a second consecutive finish and performance bonus
BJJ phenom, Beatriz Mesquita (6-0), makes her sophomore appearance in the promotion after a POTN winning submission over Irina Alekseeva in her debut. A second degree black belt under Leticia Ribeira, “The Lady GOAT” boasts a 100% finish rate in her professional MMA career outside of a win by DQ where her opponent landed an egregious up kick. At 34, time isn’t exactly on “Bia’s” side in terms of longevity with the promotion, but the sparse nature of the landscape at women’s bantamweight means that a potential title run isn’t necessarily out of the question either.
Montserrat Rendon: Can "Monster" produce her first win streak in the promotion?
Fresh off fraud checking Alice Pereira at UFC Noche last September, Montserrat Rendon (7-1) looks to parlay the success of her last bout into her first win streak under the UFC banner. Prior to earning the nod over “Golden Girl,” the 38 year old “Monster” was 1-1 in the promotion, winning a decision over Tamires Vidal in her debut before dropping one to Darya Zheleznyakova in her second bout. Tall for the division at 5’8, Rendon’s greatest drawback is her lack of stopping power; in seven professional victories, she has never managed to earn a stoppage victory.
Beatriz Mesquita vs Montserrat Rendon prediction
Rendon may have come up large as an underdog last time out, but history won’t be repeating itself here. Certified can crusher, Alice Pereira, was the classic case of an overhyped prospect who wasn’t ready for the UFC, earning her spot on the Noche card courtesy of the storyline associated with being the youngest female debutant in the promotion’s history.
That won’t be the case against Mesquita. “Bia” may only have six professional fights under her belt, but she’s got such a wealth of grappling experience to fall back on that she already presents a problem for the vast majority of the division. Moreover, she’s not just a jiu-jitsu fighter; Mesquita has already demonstrated solid takedowns and nasty ground and pound to complement her overall threat level when the action hits the mat.
Rendon’s best chance of victory is to keep this standing, but her lack of potential to shut Mesquita’s lights out on the feet means that “The Lady GOAT” is unlikely to be deterred when trying to drag the action to the mat. Furthermore, while she’s got a four inch edge in height, the reach discrepancy is actually only half an inch. “Monster’s" height advantage could actually prove to be detrimental against a shorter fighter pursuing takedowns, with her higher centre of gravity allowing the Brazilian to topple her over more easily.
Once that happens, it’s likely to be curtains in short order.
Prediction: Beatriz Mesquita to win by submission
