Abusupiyan Magomedov: Sharp finisher fighting the clock as much as his opponents
Abus Magomedov (28-7-1) arrived in the UFC as a hyped prospect and announced himself by flattening Dustin Stoltzfus inside 19 seconds. Dangerous on the feet and slick on the mat, his third round arm-triangle over Brunno Ferreira sits among the better wins in the division, however, the German’s one persistent flaw is his cardio. This issue has seen him fade and get finished before, most notably when Sean Strickland, the current middleweight champ, weathered the first round and took over in the second. His three UFC losses have all come against elite competition in Strickland, Caio Borralho, and Joe Pyfer. The gas tank looks improved as of recent, but it still remains the question that looms over him.
Michal Oleksiejczuk: Reborn under the Fighting Nerds banner
Michal Oleksiejczuk (22-9) has completely revived his career since changing camps to Brazil’s Fighting Nerds, ripping off three straight wins. The Polish southpaw blitzed through both Sedriques Dumas and GM3 inside a round before proving he could go the distance, grinding out a Fight of the Night decision over the durable dog Marc-Andre Barriault. A former light heavyweight, he hits ferociously hard, and loves a scrap. The glaring hole remains in his grappling, six of his nine defeats have come by submission, five of them inside the UFC.
Abusupiyan Magomedov vs Michal Oleksiejczuk prediction
Against their shared opponents, both men have lost to Borralho, but Abus took him the full three rounds while Oleksiejczuk was choked out in the second, and that contrast gives a read on this fight. Oleksiejczuk’s path is clear, he carries the heavy hands, the better body work, and the bulk of his finishes come early, so a first round knockout sits firmly on the table if he catches Magomedov clean while he’s still fresh.
That’s a pretty narrow window though. Abus is the more complete fighter, crisper technically on the feet, and a level above on the ground, and if he survives the early exchanges and gets the fight to the mat, it could tilt his way fast. Oleksiejczuk’s grappling has been a liability his entire career, and against a finisher like Magomedov, it could be exposed again. The caveat is that Oleksiejczuk possesses all the intangibles, he’s got more dog inside him, the durability, the heart, and the better cardio to make it ugly if it drags out long.
The likeliest sequence I see is Abus to grab a hold of Michal coming in, drag him to the mat with an outside trip, and go to work for the tap before his cardio fades completely. This fight could go either way, and whichever way it swings, it’ll be exciting. With Oleksiejczuk tapping in six of his nine losses, the submission is where I see the fight will end.
Prediction: Abus Magomedov to win by submission
