Daniil Donchenko: The Ukrainian prospect looks to continue his rise through the ranks

One of the more exciting TUF winners in recent memory, Daniil Donchenko (13-2) fights like his opponents owe him money. A veteran of fifteen pro MMA fights at the tender age of 24, the Ukrainian native blitzed through TUF for Team Cormier, punctuating his run with a brutal first round TKO over first pick, Rodrigo Sezinando, in the finale. Putting a frenetic pace on his opponents with constant forward pressure and high output, Donchenko beat the brakes off Alex Morono in his first appearance post-TUF, landing 100 significant strikes against the veteran to earn a lopsided decision victory in February.

Theodor Berggren: Can the Cage Warriors alum cash in as a major underdog?

A late replacement after Andreas Gustafsson was released from the promotion due to a heart condition, Theodor Bergren (8-3) looks to make the most of his shot at the big leagues come Saturday night. “Simba” is a polished striker who has fought in Cage Warriors and FCR, scoring finishes in all eight of his professional wins to date. The 26 year old Swede has only ever been finished by Justin Burlinson, the current Cage Warriors welterweight champion and a veteran of the Contender Series, eventually giving up a third round submission victory after starting strongly and landing big shots on the Englishman.

Daniil Donchenko vs Theodor Berggren prediction

Stepping in for the released Andreas Gustafsson, Bergren is big for the division at 6’0” and is an excellent striker with crisp technique and thudding power. The Swede gave Justin Burlinson all he could handle en route to a late submission defeat. However, it’s hard to escape the sensation that he’s being fed to the lions on short notice here.

I really like what I’ve seen from Donchenko so far. Much like a welterweight Jiri Prochazka, the Ukrainian has that dog in him and is an all-action striker. Willing to throw the kitchen sink at his opponents in search of the finish, Donchenko fires heavy shots at an impressive clip and marches his opponents down with relentless pressure. At 24, the TUF winner has accumulated a solid amount of experience and has considerable room to grow, with his fight style and personality gaining him a rapidly growing following.

Bergren must be commended for stepping in at the eleventh hour, but this isn’t the sort of fight that you take on short notice. I think Donchenko is going to march forward and lay hands on the Swede in short order, corralling “Simba” and clobbering him with hooks up against the cage to score a first round stoppage.

Prediction: Daniil Donchenko to win by TKO
