After a shock blank to 2. Bundesliga champions Schalke 04, Bayern Munich are playing catch-up early on and can’t afford a similar story against another newly promoted side in SV Elversberg.

SV Elversberg preview: Down to earth

SV Elversberg were comfortable winners on the opening round but it was quite the opposite story last weekend. Following a nightmare start away to Werder Bremen which saw them concede inside the opening five minutes, Martin Demichelis’ side never quite recovered, ultimately losing 3-1 as they paid the price for having to commit multiple bodies forward and leave themselves exposed at the back.

Since then, it’s gotten even worse for Demichelis and his players, having been taken down emphatically by Como in the Champions League. Once again, Leipzig were victims of an awful start and they went in at half-time two goals down. In the end, it finished 4-1 to the Serie A side to cap off a nightmare week for the Germans.

Bayern Munich preview: Shocking shut out

For the first time in 60 games across all competitions, Bayern Munich failed to score in a competitive fixture last weekend as Loris Karius and Schalke 04 held them to a 0-0 draw in Gelsenkirchen. You have to go back over 18 months for the last time the Rekordmeister were shut out, as head coach Vincent Kompany paid the price for leaving top attacking duo Harry Kane and Michael Olise on the bench.

They quickly bounced back in the Champions League midweek, putting Norwegian champions Bodo/Glimt to the sword in a five-goal second half blitz which saw Kane both score and assist, along with Olise finding the net twice, one of those an unbelievable strike from well outside the box and the second a jinking solo run and finish.

SV Elversberg team news: Couple of question marks

SV Elversberg are the story of the season so far in the Bundesliga, with six points from two games following a pair of absolute thrillers. After picking up their first ever win in the German top flight against Bayer Leverkusen in a 3-2 game, they went one better on the road last time out, defeating Borussia Monchengladbach 3-4 and stunning the home support.

It’s safe to say that they’ll need to tighten up defensively at some point, especially here against Bayern Munich. But from a neutral’s perspective this team are a breath of fresh air and it’s hard to take your eyes off them. Whilst they maintain this sort of attacking potency, Elversberg can beat anyone.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Kristof; Gyamerah, Pinckert, Rohr, Gunther; Keidel, Poreba; Petkov, Onyeka, Campbell; Mokwa

Unavailable: Seifert (Injured), Zimmerschied (Injured)

Bayern Munich team news: A few changes

Expect Vincent Kompany to rotate his squad as he keeps things fresh after playing in Europe on Thursday, with the likes of Saibari, Bischof and Brown potentially coming into the starting line-up.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Stanisic, Tah, Upamecano, Brown; Kimmich, Bischof; Olise, Saibari, Diaz; Kane

Unavailable:

Questionable: Gnabry (Injured)

SV Elversberg vs Bayern Munich prediction

A historic Sunday afternoon for SV Elversberg at home to the Bundesliga champions and having already captured the attention of Germany, they certainly won’t fear the challenge ahead. Bayern Munich won’t be taking this lightly after what happened in Gelsenkirchen and all the big guns will surely be in from the start. However, they’ll need to utilise their squad with a quick turnaround in games.

When taking into account what we’ve seen from the Elversberg backline so far, Bayern will surely be able to find the net multiple times as their opponents haven’t yet proved that they can contain the opposition despite their own offensive prowess. Bayern feels ultimately, like a bridge too far for the newly promoted side and reality is expected to bite here.

SV Elversberg vs Bayern Munich tip: Bayern Munich to win with -2 handicap
