Last weekend, at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria, the dominant force of South African football, the Mamelodi Sundowns, who are preparing for this summer’s 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, took a 54th minute lead via Lucas Ribeiro Costa before Pyramids FC managed to snatch themselves an equaliser deep into second-half stoppage-time, with that goal scored by attacking midfielder Walid El Karti.
Pyramids FC were much the weaker of the two sides in terms of who wanted to play more of the football, and yet they remained extremely effective and potent on the counter-attack throughout – whether they can do that at home remains to be seen.
Heading home to Egypt without being behind will be a major boost for Pyramids but the better of the two sides remains the Sundowns and siding with them may well be a good value bet for the second-leg of this season’s CAF Champions League final.
