Newcastle preview: The big occasion

Newcastle United are becoming more and more a ‘big game team’ with some excellent performances in the UEFA Champions League this season but the 2024/25 EFL Cup winners have struggled for form and consistency in the Premier League.

The Magpies begin the 12th match day of the campaign sitting just a couple of points above the bottom three and the relegation places. Newcastle suffered a 3-1 defeat to Brentford a couple of weeks ago, having taken the lead in that game down in London.

Man City preview: Form has been found

Pep Guardiola and his Manchester City have yet another evolution and iteration for people to get to grips with and it does appear as though the usually dominant force of English football have begun to click once again.

City headed into the break a couple of weeks ago on the back of an impressive 3-0 hammering of champions Liverpool, courtesy of goals from Erling Braut Haaland, Nico Gonzalez and Jeremy Doku.

Newcastle team news: Positive news for Newcastle

Eddie Howe has confirmed that England international duo Tino Livramento and Anthony Gordon are 'very close' to being involved and so it wouldn't be a surprise to see the Magpies risk the pair against City.

It has also been confirmed that goalkeeper Nick Pope and midfielder Sandro Tonali have both been passed fit, while summer signing Yoane Wissa remains unavailable after joining from Brentford. Dan Burn is missing through suspension.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Schar, Botman, Livramento; Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton; Murphy, Woltemade, Gordon

Unavailable: Burn (Suspended), Ashby (Injured), Wissa (Injured)

Questionable: Livramento (Fitness), Gordon (Fitness), Osula (Fitness)

Man City team news: Still no Rodri or Kovacic

In his pre-match press conference, Pep Guardiola has confirmed that midfield duo Rodri and Mateo Kovacic remain sidelined but the visitors have no other injury concerns aside from that pair.

Guardiola has begun to find a team and an idea that will be difficult to break into for the rest of the squad with Jeremy Doku in particular playing extremely well on the left-hand side.

Predicted XI (4-1-4-1): Donnarumma; Nunes, Dias, Gvardiol, O'Reilly; Gonzalez; Silva, Foden, Cherki, Doku; Haaland

Unavailable: Rodri (Injured), Kovacic (Injured)

Questionable:

Newcastle vs Man City prediction

Now, it does appear as though City have now found themselves in the midst of some excellent form and they have found solutions to problems that have emerged over the last 15 months or so. That said, though, as shown by a defeat at Villa Park against Aston Villa last month, they are still not the relentless force that they once were. Newcastle, under the lights with their raucous atmosphere, will take the game to City but the form of both would still indicate an away win.
