Bologna are searching for a return to European football this season as they kick off against a Lazio side that are already in a bit of chaos off the pitch.

Bologna preview: Encouraging summer

Bologna have been one of the more entertaining teams to watch in Serie A for the last few seasons but their inconsistency has undermined them. They narrowly missed out on the top seven and the European spots last season.

Over the summer, to rectify that and just to improve them a touch, Bologna have appointed former Belgium boss Domenico Tedesco. As a part of their summer transfer window, they have made the marquee addition of Ukraine international striker Artem Dovbyk from Roma.

Lazio preview: Already in crisis

Lazio supporters are organising protests against the running of the club with president Claudio Lotito heading into his 23rd season at the club with the Romans taking the decision to appoint Gennaro Gattuso over the summer, with his most recent job being to oversee Italy's failure to qualify for FIFA World Cup 2026 in the spring of this year.

Lazio have done very little business over the summer after some major sales last season, such as Matteo Guendouzi and Taty Castellanos in the winter and now the sales of Ivan Provedel and Mario Gila over the summer.

Bologna team news: Couple of defensive doubts

Bologna head into their opener with a couple of doubts at the back as centre-back Martin Vitik is set to be sidelined alongside former Lazio man Nicolo Casale.

Predicted XI (4-1-4-1): Skorupski; Holm, Heggem, Helland, Juan Miranda; Ferguson; Bernadeschi, Amondairin, Pobega, Rowe; Dovbyk

Unavailable:

Questionable: Vitik (Injured), Casale (Injured)

Lazio team news: Several doubts

Lazio head to Bologna with several injury doubts for this one as defenders Alessio Romagnoli, Nuno Tavares and Patric may be sidelined alongside Daniel Cataldi and Gustav Isaksen.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Mandas; Mussolini Jr, Doekhi, Gigot, Alfonso Pedraza; Dele-Bashiru, Rovella, Belahyane; Cancellieri, Dia, Lazzari

Unavailable: Furlanetto (Injured)

Questionable: Romagnoli (Injured), Tavares (Injured), Patric (Injured), Cataldi (Injured), Isaksen (Injured)

Bologna vs Lazio prediction

Bologna have opted for more of a tactical pragmatist with the appointment of Tedesco. If they can match their generally good and slick attacking play with a bit more effectiveness at both ends of the pitch then they should be sides with to begin the 2026-27 Serie A campaign with a victory against a Lazio side that many are worried about once again after they finished last season as low as ninth and were perhaps fortunate to finish in the top-half of the table.

Bologna vs Lazio tip: Bologna to win
