Roma preview: A new era for Roma
Former Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini was involved in a dispute with club legend and director Claudio Ranieri in the second half of last season but Roma overcame that to finish third and once again qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
Over the summer, the Giallorossi have added two impressive signings at both ends of the pitch with Greece international centre-back Konstantinos Koulierakis joining from Wolfsburg alongside striker Santiago Castro from Bologna.
Fiorentina preview: Big spending I Viola
Fiorentina have enjoyed what appears to be an impressive summer transfer window on paper with Franco Mastantuono joining on loan from Real Madrid headlining things. Big money signings Arthur Atta and Christ Inao Oulai have also arrived in Florence.
Last season saw I Viola battling against relegation but that may have helped them to reset. Their season has often faded late on with their involvement in the UEFA Europa Conference League - reaching the final in both the 2022-23 and the 2023-24 seasons before getting to the semi-finals a year later and then the quarter-finals last season. A year off from that competition should help them re-focus.
Roma team news: No Pellegrini
Club captain Lorenzo Pellegrini remains sidelined for Roma in their opener, while Wesley is working his way back to full fitness after sustaining an ankle injury in pre-season.
Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Svilar; Rensch, Koulierakis, Ndicka; Nahuel Molina, Cristante, El Aynaoui, Rodrigo Mora; Malen, Dybala; Castro
Unavailable: Bah (Injured), Pellegrini (Injured)
Questionable: Wesley (Injured), Pisilli (Injured)
Fiorentina team news: Doubts over new signings
Key new signings such as Joao Mario and Arthur Atta are doubtful for this opener alongside midfielder Rolando Mandragora an injury concern. Fabiano Parisi is a confirmed absentee.
Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): David de Gea; Dodo, Pongracic, Dragusin, Ranieri; Fagioli, Inao Oulai; Mastantuono, Brescianini, Gudmundsson; Kean
Unavailable: Parisi (Injured)
Questionable: Mandragora (Injured), Joao Mario (Injured), Alex Jimenez (Injured), Atta (Injured)
Roma vs Fiorentina prediction
Fiorentina have performed well in the last half a decade or so, with those European runs showcasing that, and yet they have been left frustrated and requiring a rebuild. Ambition has been shown this summer and the appointment of Fabio Grosso, who did an excellent job with Sassuolo in the last couple of years, is also a positive one. This looks set to perhaps be the marquee clash on the opening day of the season and it should be a fun watch for the neutral at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
