Mainz Preview: Mainz on the charge

Mainz begin the restart of the 2024/25 Bundesliga season after the winter break sitting fifth in the table as they chase a potential surprise UEFA Champions League qualification under the management of reportedly in-demand coach Bo Henriksen.

They went into the aforementioned winter break on the back of another impressive result as they defeated Eintracht Frankfurt by three goals to one to mean they have won five of their last six matches in the Bundesliga.

Bochum Preview: Another battle for Bochum

Last season, Bochum avoided the drop, in their first season back in the top-flight, by defeating Hamburg in the end of season relegation/promotion playoff place and the visitors begin the restart sitting rock-bottom in the Bundesliga table.

However, they went into the break on the back of a much-needed 2-0 defeat of fellow strugglers Heidenheim a few weeks ago. That vital three points was their first win of the campaign after a horrific start to the season.

Mainz Team News: Amiri suspension

Key midfielder Nadim Amiri is missing through suspension for this weekend, whilst Gabriel Vidovic is out with an ankle injury. They also have a couple of key first-team injury doubts such as Silvan Widmer and Jonathan Burkardt.

Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Zentner; Da Costa, Bell, Kohr; Caci, Sano, Hong, Mwene; Nebel, Lee; Sieb

Unavailable: Amiri (Suspended), Vidovic (Injured)

Questionable: Widmer (Injured), Dal (Injured), Burkardt (Injured)

Bochum Team News: Miyoshi suspension

In a 1-1 draw away to St Pauli a few weeks ago, former Birmingham City winger Koji Miyoshi was sent off and he is now missing through suspension for this one. Gerrit Holtmann is an injury doubt alongside Aliou Balde.

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Drewes; Oermann, Ordets, Bernardo; Passlack, Bero, Losilla, Sissoko, Wittek; Hofmann, Broschinski

Unavailable: Miyoshi (Suspended)

Questionable: Holtmann (Injured), Balde (Injured)

Mainz vs Bochum Prediction

Mainz have been very impressive throughout this campaign. They have a couple of issues to iron out for their starting eleven this weekend due to the aforementioned suspension of Amiri and injury issue involving the in-form Burkardt. Even with those issues, they now face a Bochum side that appear destined for a prolonged return to the second-tier and Mainz, especially with their home advantage, should come out on top in this one.
