Madison Keys enjoyed her best run of the season so far in Charleston at the start of this month, winning three matches in a row to progress to the last four. She came from a set down to beat Belinda Bencic in the quarter-finals, but despite being the clear favourite against Yuliia Starodubtseva, she lost in straight sets.
The 2025 Australian Open champion received a bye in the first-round and now faces Shuai Zhang. The Chinese player ended her six-match losing run with a win over Eva Lys. It was a very comfortable win for Zhang, as she wasn’t broken on serve and won 6-4 6-3.
Zhang has caused problems for Keys in the past, and she leads the head-to-head 5-3. She won their last match on clay too, causing an upset by defeating the American in the first-round of the French Open in 2020. However, they have not faced each other for nearly four years, and Keys is a more complete player these days.
