Linda Noskova got her clay court campaign off to a decent start in Stuttgart, beating Shuai Zhang and Ekaterina Alexandrova to advance to the quarter-finals. However, she was then defeated by Elina Svitolina. Noskova’s best result of the season so far was a semi-final appearance at Indian Wells, where she lost to world number one Aryna Sabalenka.
The Czech received a bye in round one and now faces Emiliana Arango. She produced a fine display to beat Talia Gibson in round one. Gibson has been one of the most consistent performers on the tour over the past few months, following her displays at the Sunshine Double events as a qualifier, but aside from an early break, she was never truly in the contest as Arango won 6-3 6-2.
Noskova will be the clear favourite, and if she performs like she did last week, Arango is likely to find it difficult in this second-round match.
