Leeds preview: Tough week
Leeds were given a stern lesson last weekend with likely Premier League challengers Arsenal swatting them aside with a convincing 5-0 victory that highlighted the gulf in class between the two sides.
There was more disappointment for Daniel Farke's men against Sheffield Wednesday in the EFL Cup on Tuesday. After Jayden Bogle's 81st-minute goal ensured that normal time ended 1-1 at Hillsborough, the visitors missed all three penalties in the resulting shootout. to bow out of the competition.
Newcastle preview: Cruel loss
In a hugely dramatic contest with Liverpool at St James' Park on Monday, Newcastle were left heartbroken after the visitors struck a late winner through 16-year-old Rio Ngumoha in the 100th minute.
The 2-3 defeat was not without positives though, as the Magpies were largely the better team and fought back superbly from two goals down despite the fact Anthony Gordon was sent off in first-half injury time.
Leeds team news: Tanaka joins Ampadu on the injury list
Having already lost Ethan Ampadu to an MCL injury, fellow midfielder Ao Tanaka has since suffered the same fate and the pair will not return until after the international break.
Recent signing Noah Okafor picked up a groin strain against Sheffield Wednesday and is therefore doubtful to make his first Premier League start.
Predicted XI (4-3-3): Perri; Bogle, Rodon, Struijk, Gudmundsson; Longstaff, Gruev, Stach; James, Piroe, Gnonto
Unavailable: Tanaka (Injured), Ampadu (Injured)
Questionable: Okafor (Injured)
Newcastle team news: Schar available
The defeat to Liverpool was a bruising one for a number of reasons, not least from an injury perspective as Sandro Tonali and Joelinton both sustained knocks, although the former could recover from his shoulder issue in time to face Leeds.
Fabian Schar was also a concern but is available after following concussion protocols, while Gordon begins a three-match ban and recent acquisition Nick Woltemade is unlikely to be registered in time to play.
Predicted XI (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Schar, Burn, Livramento; Guimaraes, Tonali, Ramsey; Elanga, Osula, Barnes
Unavailable: Gordon (Suspended), Isak (Personal reasons)
Questionable: Woltemade (Ineligible)
Leeds vs Newcastle prediction
Newcastle will still be smarting from Monday's bitter defeat to Liverpool, and Eddie Howe will be urging his players to use that as fuel to bounce back against a promoted side here.
Leeds' defensive vulnerabilities were exposed against Arsenal, and although Newcastle will be without the suspended Anthony Gordon and the seemingly outbound Alexander Isak, William Osula - who scored off the bench last weekend - will be keen to make the most of his opportunity given that the Magpies are in the process of replenishing their striker options in the transfer market.
Osula took his goal well last week, and we think he offers good value in the anytime goalscorer market.
