Girona preview: Going back to the old guys

Girona finished third and qualified for the UEFA Champions League in what was just their fifth ever La Liga campaign last season before the sales of the likes of Aleix Garcia, Savio and Artem Dovbyk prompted a poorer campaign that manager Michel had predicted.

He didn’t expect that they would find themselves in a relegation battle but they have timed a good run of form well at the back end of this season with Michel going back to experienced players who clearly care more about the club such as Portu and Cristhian Stuani.

Atletico Madrid preview: Atletico’s potential

Atletico Madrid were going for the treble as recently as mid-March but they have instead had to coast towards the end of the campaign with Diego Simeone’s Los Rojiblancos occasionally putting in some brilliant performances, as they did at the Metropolitano last weekend.

Welcoming Manuel Pellegrini’s Real Betis side to the capital city last week, Atleti dispatched of the Andalusians by four goals to one with Julian Alvarez notching a brace, including an excellent free-kick, as well as strikes from Robin Le Normand and Angel Correa.

Girona team news: Several injuries

Ahead of the visit of Atletico Madrid this weekend, Girona are dealing with a few injury issues for this one as former Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek remains sidelined alongside Tottenham Hotspur loanee Bryan Gil.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Krapyvtsov; Arnau Martinez, Alejandro Frances, Krejci, Blind; Yangel Herrera, Jhon Solis; Tsygankov, Ivan Martin, Yaser Asprilla; Cristhian Stuani

Atletico Madrid team news: Nothing fresh

There are no fresh injury concerns or suspension issues for Atletico Madrid to deal with this weekend. Young defensive midfielder Pablo Barrios remains a doubt for Atleti due to a concussion.

Predicted XI (4-4-2): Oblak; Marcos Llorente, Le Normand, Lenglet, Javi Galan; Giuliano Simeone, De Paul, Koke, Samuel Lino; Sorloth, Julian Alvarez

Questionable: Pablo Barrios (Concussion)

Girona vs Atletico Madrid prediction

Girona have perhaps let themselves back off the leash. They have been one of the most entertaining teams to watch in La Liga in the last few years but the Catalans became more defensive to ensure La Liga status. They do now, though, come into this one on the back of a 3-2 loss against Real Sociedad. Despite Diego Simeone’s desire, Atletico have a fun and entertaining squad and, just like last week, have the potential to play some good football so both teams scoring may well be a good bet for this one in Catalonia.

Girona vs Atletico Madrid tip: Both teams to score
