In the league phase of the UEFA Champions League, Club Brugge defeated Aston Villa by a goal to nil at the Janbreydelstadion and they will hope to repeat that success in Belgium this week.

Club Brugge Preview: Brugge’s brilliance

Club Brugge come into this one on the back of a 1-1 draw with Gent at the Ghelamco Arena in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League at the weekend with Ferran Jutgla’s strike being cancelled out in second-half stoppage-time. They sit second in the Belgian top-flight.

In the knockout playoff round of the UEFA Champions League last month, the Belgian giants produced an upset to defeat Serie A side Atalanta by five goals to two on aggregate with an impressive 3-1 defeat of the Bergamasci in Italy in the second-leg.

Aston Villa Preview: Villains’ searching for consistency

Unai Emery’s Aston Villa have been inconsistent throughout the season but the visitors do now come into this one on the back of a hard-fought 2-0 defeat of Championship side Cardiff City in the fifth round of the FA Cup at the weekend thanks to a Marco Asensio brace.

The visitors have been left a little frustrated in the league with four points collected from recent matches against Liverpool and Chelsea but then suffering a 4-1 defeat to Crystal Palace. They finished eighth in the league phase of the UEFA Champions League.

Club Brugge Team News: Couple of doubts

There are no confirmed absentees for the Belgian giants this week but they are dealing with a couple of doubts as Raphael Onyedika suffered a knock at the weekend, whilst defender Joaquin Seys is dealing with a hamstring issue, too.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Mignolet; Sabbe, Ordonez, Mechele, De Cuyper; Vetlesen, Jashari, Vanaken; Talbi, Jutgla, Tzolis

Unavailable:

Questionable: Seys (Injured), Onyedika (Injured)

Aston Villa Team News: No Torres or Onana

Aston Villa have several issues ahead of their second trip to Brugge of the campaign as both Pau Torres and Amadou Onana remain unavailable with Tyrone Mings once again a doubt due to a knee injury with both Matty Cash and Ross Barkley also potentially missing.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Martinez; Bogarde, Konsa, Disasi, Digne; Tielemans, McGinn; Bailey, Rogers, Asensio; Watkins

Unavailable: Torres (Injured), Onana (Injured)

Questionable: Mings (Injured), Cash (Injured), Barkley (Injured)

Club Brugge vs Aston Villa Prediction

Club Brugge have some real quality on the counter-attack and that is a necessity because their intention is always to generally sit back and be difficult to play against as they have been against Villa, Juventus, Sporting CP and Atalanta in this competition. Aston Villa are inconsistent and will fancy their chances of winning at Villa Park so minimising damage may well be the prerogative here and, as a result, a low-scoring affair seems likely.

Club Brugge vs Aston Villa Tip: Under 3.5 goals
