Augsburg preview: Breaking the cycle

Augsburg's winless run in the Bundesliga stretched to five games last weekend, as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Union Berlin. Two of those five matches ended in defeat, at the hands of Werder Bremen and SV Elversberg respectively, although Manuel Baum's side do at least deserve credit for holding Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen to draws.

Defensive fragility has been one of the main reasons behind their recent dip, with Augsburg conceding 12 goals over the course of those five matches. However, they did get back to winning ways in the DFB-Pokal midweek, overcoming third-tier side SG by four goals to two. Baum will hope that result can provide the springboard needed for a return to form in the league.

Freiburg preview: Honeymoon over

After picking up 13 points from a possible 15 to begin their league campaign, Freiburg have since been brought down to earth by Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich. They were beaten 2-1 at the BayArena before welcoming league leaders and reigning champions Bayern to the Black Forest. Over the course of 90 minutes, they were outclassed by the Rekordmeister, eventually losing by three goals to one.

The honeymoon period may be over for Freiburg, but they did bounce back in midweek, beating Wolfsburg 3-2 in the DFB-Pokal. Keisuke Goto was the hero, scoring a late brace to send his side into the next round. Schuster will hope that the result restores some confidence ahead of their trip to a struggling Augsburg side.

Augsburg vs Freiburg prediction

Augsburg's defensive frailties have been badly exposed in recent weeks, although their midweek cup win will have provided a timely lift. However, conceding 12 goals in five league games is a worrying trend. Whilst Manuel Baum's side have shown they can frustrate the division's elite, the hosts have struggled to turn those performances into victories.

Freiburg have cooled off after their blistering start, yet defeats to Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich are hardly cause for panic. Their battling cup win over Wolfsburg showed plenty of character and with their only losses this campaign coming against two of the Bundesliga's heavyweights, backing Freiburg to avoid defeat at the very least looks the sensible option here.

Augsburg vs Freiburg tip: Double chance - draw/Freiburg
