Both SV Elversberg and Mainz are locked together on ten points with both coming off the back of consecutive defeats in all competitions.

SV Elversberg preview: Shipping goals

SV Elversberg were outclassed away at RB Leipzig last weekend, with Vincent Wagner's side losing four-nil at the Red Bull Arena. Since then, they have been knocked out of the DFB Pokal at the hands of Darmstadt, meaning they have now lost three of their last four games in all competitions. Most worrying from Elversberg's perspective has been their recent defensive fragility, with nine goals conceded across their last three matches.

The back line will need to tighten up if they are to have success here. However, with the newly promoted side eighth in the Bundesliga table, there is still plenty of reason for excitement moving forward.

Mainz preview: Domestic slump

Like their opponents, Mainz have also lost three of their last four matches in all competitions, having been beaten in the DFB Pokal midweek by Bochum. That followed a 3-2 Bundesliga loss against Werder Bremen, a game which saw Mainz give up two early penalties, leaving them with a mountain to climb. While they fought admirably, they were left with too much to do.

If Mainz are to turn things around, they need to avoid shooting themselves in the foot as they did last weekend. Head coach Urs Fischer likely had strong words for his squad after their DFB Pokal exit, and a reaction is expected in this one.

SV Elversberg team news: Without trio

SV Elversberg won’t be able to call upon Gyamerah, Seifert or Zimmerschied for this Friday night encounter, although Darvich still stands a chance of featuring.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Kristof; Sirch, Pinckert, Rohr, Gunther; Keidel, Poreba; Petkov, Onyeka, Krattenmacher; Mokwa

Unavailable: Gyamerah (Injured), Seifert (Injured), Zimmerschied (Injured)

Questionable: Darvich (Injured)

Mainz team news: Duo missing

Mainz are without both Dominik Kohr and Silas, the latter a long-term absentee due to a broken leg, while Ruoppi is doubtful for the visitors.

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Zentner; Posch, Gruber, Potulski; Caci, Amiri, Sano, Lee, Mwene; Tietz, Becker

Unavailable: Kohr (Injured), Silas (Injured)

Questionable: Ruoppi (Injured)

SV Elversberg vs Mainz prediction

Both teams should see this as a very winnable fixture, with SV Elversberg having home advantage and Mainz looking to capitalise on how vulnerable their opponents have been at the back recently. This should lead to a contest full of action and chances to score at both ends of the field. Mainz have racked up four more goals than the hosts over the course of the Bundesliga season and also conceded fewer.

But if there’s one thing we’ve learned already this campaign, it’s not to doubt Elversberg. They’ll happily trade attacking blows with Mainz and go for the victory late on. It’s well worth backing both teams to score, regardless of the final outcome.
