Arsenal preview: Backing it up

Mikel Arteta and his Arsenal side are now in a new era. Having been runners-up in three successive seasons, the Gunners are now the team to beat and they appear to have a good chance of defending their title with so many of the leading clubs rebuilding.

Manchester City and Liverpool, for example, are the two teams that have beaten them to the title in recent years but they head into the season with new managers, which is also the same for Chelsea – and the settled Arsenal, who may evolve their side to become more proactive, will sense a huge opportunity to send out a statement on opening day.

Arsenal began the 2026-27 season with an impressive performance in the Community Shield as they hammered Manchester City by three goals to nil at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

Coventry preview: Back in the top-flight

Following their rise back from League Two to the Championship, even losing a second-tier play-off final, Frank Lampard took charge of Coventry City mid-way through the 2024-25 season and the former Everton and Chelsea boss led the Sky Blues to the play-off semi-finals that season.

After disappointment against the eventually-promoted Sunderland in that campaign, Coventry then set about an extremely impressive 2025-26 season. City threatened to break records mid-way through the campaign, eventually having to overcome a major mid-season blip to ease themselves back up to the Premier League as champions.

After a relatively slow start to the summer transfer window, Coventry have begun to spend some money with Carl Rushworth and then Caleb Yirenkyi breaking their club-record fee alongside the additions of Loum Tchaouna, Aurele Amenda and Gustavo Hamer with Sidiki Cherif and Taiwo Awoniyi both also set to join.

Arsenal team news: Defensive injuries

Arsenal are dealing with defensive injuries here as William Saliba and Jurrien Timber are missing from the start of this season with the former set to be unavailable for a while.

Bukayo Saka was left on the bench behind Noni Madueke in the Community Shield with Declan Rice also left out and it wouldn't be a surprise to see the same eleven named by Mikel Arteta.

Further details will appear here following pre-match press conferences…

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Raya; White, Mosquera, Gabriel, Calafiori; Guimaraes, Lewis-Skelly, Odegaard; Madueke, Havertz, Tzolis

Coventry team news: Rudoni unlikely to be available

Key man Jack Rudoni returned to pre-season training late after the attacking midfielder, who has modelled his game on manager Frank Lampard, required shoulder surgery.

Coventry have made some big money signings this summer, breaking their club-record twice to bring back goalkeeper Carl Rushworth and bring in Ghana international midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi.

Further details will appear here following pre-match press conferences…

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Rushworth; Van Ewijk, Thomas, Kitching, Dasilva; Yirenkyi, Grimes; Tchaouna, Torp, Mason-Clark; Simms

Arsenal vs Coventry prediction

Coventry boss Frank Lampard has to show just how much he has improved as a tactician. Often too open with Derby County and then Chelsea, his Everton side went too far the other way and the concern would be that he may fall into that trap, limiting Coventry, especially away from home against the biggest and best. There were signs of a better balance to Lampard and Coventry’s tactics last year, though. Arsenal will be expected to evolve their style to become more attacking this time around, with the Premier League title now under their belt. A home win is to be expected but it could be quite a high-scoring game with Coventry potentially setting up to catch them by surprise on the counter-attack with a more proactive style than Lampard’s last stint in the Premier League with Everton.

Arsenal vs Coventry tip: Arsenal to win & over 2.5 goals
