The German claimed a 6-4 7-6 success over the veteran and will now meet an in-form Sebastian Baez after the world number 56 upset third seed Arthur Rinderknech 7-6 2-6 6-4.
Hanfmann sits just four places better off in the rankings but did win 5-7 6-3 7-5 when they met in their only previous tour-level match at this very tournament last year.
Baez did triumph narrowly in three sets in a Rio qualifier back in 2022 and given how close it has been in the past and how well they are playing, it’s a good shout for this to go three.
