Wolves preview: Good start to 2026

Performances did appear to be improving with narrow defeats against Liverpool and Arsenal, and now Wolverhampton Wanderers are beginning to be more positive after a four-match unbeaten run of form across all competitions ahead of this one.

Rob Edwards’ side shared a 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford to round off 2025 before a 3-0 hammering of fellow strugglers West Ham United, a 1-1 draw with Everton and then a 6-1 demolition of Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup.

Newcastle preview: Inconsistent Newcastle

Newcastle United have been inconsistent throughout this season since their tumultuous summer transfer window and, just as they appeared to be stringing results together, they come into this one on the back of a worrying and frustrating week.

Having escaped an FA Cup third round tie with AFC Bournemouth by winning a penalty shootout after a thrilling 3-3 draw at St James’ Park, the Tynesiders then suffered a 2-0 loss at home to Manchester City in the first-leg of their EFL Cup semi-final in midweek.

Wolves team news: Agbadou back, for now

In his pre-match press conference, Rob Edwards confirmed that Tawanda Chirewa was dealing wth illness but there are no other fresh concerns for this weekend.

The hosts have been able to welcome back Emmanuel Agbadou from international duty with Ivory Coast, albeit he is being linked with a move away, while Marshall Munetsi has joined Paris FC on loan.

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Sa; S. Bueno, Agbadou, Krejci; Doherty, Mane, J. Gomes, Arias, H. Bueno; Arokodare, Hwang

Unavailable: R. Gomes (Injured), Toti (Injured), Chiwone (Injured), Bellegarde (Injured)

Questionable: Chirewa (Illness)

Newcastle team news: Schar surgery

Switzerland international centre-back Fabian Schar has undergone surgery on ankle injury and so he is sidelined until the spring with Jacob Murphy also unavailable for the visitors.

As well as that, full-back duo Emil Krafth and Tino Livramento remain sidelined with Dan Burn and Will Osula closing in on their respective returns from injury.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Pope; Trippier, Thiaw, Schar, Hall; Tonali, Guimaraes, Ramsey; Barnes, Woltemade, Gordon

Unavailable: Burn (Injured), Lascelles (Injured), Schar (Injured), Livramento (Injured), Krafth (Injured), Osula (Fitness), Murphy (Injured)

Questionable:

Wolves vs Newcastle prediction

Wolves had been becoming a lot tougher to beat, or at least score against, and now Edwards appears to have found something in terms of attacking patterns of play, especially with the development and evolution of both Mateus Mane and Jhon Arias. Newcastle will head down to the midlands fully expecting to win but it could be a tougher test than anticipated just a couple of weeks ago.

Wolves vs Newcastle tip: Double chance – Wolves to win or draw
