Terrance McKinney: Will McKinney live up to his "chin or be chinned" reputation?
Renowned as one of the more electric starters in recent UFC history, Terrance McKinney (17-8) has only seen a second round on four occasions in twenty five fights as a pro. Hell, “T-Wrecks” hasn’t had a fight leave the first round in almost three years, despite fighting six times in that period. Unfortunately for the American, his do-or-die approach does what it says on the tin; he either wins in spectacular fashion or finds himself on the wrong end of a nasty stoppage attempting to do so. Owner of the joint third fastest finish in UFC history, McKinney is coming off a submission loss to Chris Duncan, a defeat that snapped a two fight winning streak.
Kyle Nelson: "The Monster" aims to maintain a 100% winning record since his return to lightweight
A UFC competitor for almost a decade, Kyle Nelson (17-6-1) has put together a record of 5-5-1 since joining the promotion in 2018. The Canadian is a respectable 3-1-1 across his last five, with his only loss coming at the heavy hands of Steve Garcia back in September 2024. That defeat, coupled with a weight miss, prompted a move up to lightweight, where Nelson earned a unanimous decision against Matt Frevola to get himself back on track. A well-rounded threat known for a solid kickboxing game, the biggest knock against “The Monster” is his lack of stopping power, something that has allowed a number of opponents to walk him down and take over the fight in the past.
Terrance McKinney vs Kyle Nelson prediction
As with all McKinney fights, this is going to go one of two ways. “T-Wrecks” either obliterates Nelson in the early goings or gasses out and gets finished himself in the process.
There’s a reason McKinney poses such a threat in the early goings; everybody knows that he’s got dynamite in his fists but he’s also an excellent grappler, posing a legitimate threat on the ground if he’s able to drag the action there. However, it’s equally as established that if you can survive the initial onslaught, he’s going to gas out and become a literal shadow of his earlier self.
Can Nelson follow this game plan? “The Monster” is a well-rounded competitor in all facets of mixed martial arts, but the last time he faced an aggressive early starter, he melted under Steve Garcia’s relentless onslaught. He does have a number of first round finishes on his record, but they’ve come against considerably less ferocious opposition than McKinney down a weight class.
McKinney is such a dangerous fast starter that he’s hurt considerably better fighters than Nelson in the early goings, even if he wasn’t able to actually finish them. In this case, I like his chances to either land something big to put “The Monster” away or lock up a submission after hurting him on the feet in the first round.
Prediction: Terrance McKinney to win by first round stoppage
