Marcin Tybura: What does "Tybur" have left in the tank as he enters the twilight of his career?
Making his twenty fourth walk to the cage under the UFC banner on Saturday night, Marcin Tybura (27-10) has been a staple of the heavyweight division since joining the promotion in 2016. The book is out on the well-rounded “Tybur” at this point in proceedings; ranked level competition run through him with relative ease, but if you’re not up to standards, you’re getting fraud checked and likely finished in the process. With that being said, Tybura turned 40 last November and got brutally stopped by Ante Delija in his most recent appearance - a loss that has not aged well - indicating that his time as an elite gatekeeper may finally be drawing to a close.
Tyrell Fortune: Can the American defy the typical Bellator-UFC curse?
Stepping in for the injured Valter Walker, Tyrell Fortune (17-3) makes his UFC debut after cutting his teeth in promotions like Bellator and PFL. A grinding wrestler who leverages a grapple heavy approach in his MMA fights, Fortune was once touted as a prospect to watch at heavyweight before a number of disappointing set backs dampened most of the hype around him. Not helping matters in terms of proving a truly elite skillset, he’s been fighting cans on the regional scene since leaving the PFL in 2024, scoring wins over the likes of the 65-32 Tony Lopez and the 9-6 Demoreo Dennis.
Marcin Tybura vs Tyrell Fortune prediction
While his record is impressive on paper, Fortune’s strength of schedule absolutely pales in comparison to Tybura’s. The Polish veteran has shared the cage with the likes of Tom Aspinall, Alexander Volkov, and Fabricio Werdum to name but a few throughout his storied career; Linton Vassell is the best fighter Fortune has ever faced, while his most notable win is over Matt Mitrione.
There’s conceivably a path to victory for Fortune if he’s able to implement his wrestling early, but the Pole is no slouch on the ground either. The gulf in skill and experience here means that it’s just as likely that Tybura is able to reverse the American even if the action does hit the floor, hammering away with ground to pound to score a stoppage or open up the chance for a submission.
This does come with the notable caveat that Tybura is aging and has taken a lot of damage throughout his career; he looked awful against Delija and that knockout may well turn out to spell the beginning of the end for “Tybur.” However, the Bellator-UFC jump historically never tends to end well; just ask Patchy Mix or Aaron Pico. As such, while Tyrell could well end up being the exception to this status quo, I won't be picking him until he definitively proves it.
Tybura weathers an early storm to score the comeback TKO or cruises to a comfortable decision.
Prediction: Marcin Tybura to win
