Chase Hooper: "The Dream" looks to banish the demons associated with his first loss at 155 pounds
A devastating TKO defeat to Alexander Hernandez in his last appearance brought Chase Hooper (16-4-1) crashing back down to earth after beginning his lightweight tenure at a flawless 5-0 with three finishes. A superb grappler who utilizes his long frame to maximum effect on the ground, “The Dream” is well known for his submission skills, having already earned four wins by tap out under the UFC banner over the likes of Clay Guida and Jordan Leavitt. However, Hooper’s goofy striking still leaves a lot to be desired, a state of affairs that has seen him clobbered around the Octagon to lose by TKO in his two most recent defeats.
Lance Gibson Jr: Can the Canadian build on an above expectations debut against King Green?
Best known for a run in Bellator, Lance Gibson Jr. (9-2) arguably exceeded expectations in his UFC debut, giving a good account of himself despite coming up short in a decision loss to established veteran, King Green, demonstrating solid striking against the elusive veteran. A second generation UFC fighter following in the footsteps of his father, Lance Gibson, “The Fearless” has seven finishes in nine victories, with his well-rounded skillset evidenced by a stoppage rate split virtually even between KOs and submissions. At 31, the Canadian looks to be in his athletic prime and has never been tapped out in his professional career.
Chase Hooper vs Lance Gibson Jr prediction
Hooper’s striking has improved considerably since he debuted in the promotion, but it’s still the Achilles heel in his overall game. Alexander Hernandez exposed the same flaws as Steve Garcia; namely, that if “The Dream” can’t get the takedown in the early goings, his iffy defense means that he’s likely going to get flattened with something on the feet.
Gibson has a decent amount of finishes to his name, but they haven’t come against the level of competition that makes me think he’s about to nuke Hooper out cold. He’s not a one shot KO threat and while he’s got three wins by tap out on his record, it would be unwise to pursue a ground based fight with a submission artist of “The Dream’s” caliber. With that being said, he demonstrated some solid Muay Thai against a capable striker in Bobby Green last time out, indicating that he could well have what it takes to stymy Hooper on the feet.
However, Hooper’s been here before, losing the initial striking battle before eventually finding success when he’s able to ground his opponent. While it's not inconceivable that the Canadian just pieces him up for three rounds to earn a decision, “The Dream” eats a steady diet of jabs and low kicks for the first portion of the fight before eventually dragging Gibson to the mat and finding a come from behind submission victory.
Prediction: Chase Hooper to win by submission
