Israel Adesanya: Legendary striker, former champion still possessing elite striking despite recent setbacks

Israel "The Last Stylebender" Adesanya (24-5) may have suffered three consecutive losses to Dricus du Plessis, Nassourdine Imavov, and Sean Strickland, but writing him off entirely would be premature, he's not washed yet. The 36-year-old remains one of the most technically gifted strikers in UFC history - the only man to knock out Alex Pereira in MMA. Izzy's distance management, kick feints, and variety remain elite, and when he's sharp, his takedown defence has held up well even in defeat. The concern is that his reaction time and sharpness appear to be declining - he's been caught while stationary by Imavov's 1-2 and by Du Plessis' blitzes, moments that wouldn't have landed in his prime. His power has also faded noticeably, with clean finishes becoming increasingly rare.

Joe Pyfer: Right hand bomb "Bodybagz" looking to find chin of legend

Joe Pyfer (15-3) has earned his shot at a marquee opponent off the back of wins over Abus Magomedov, Kelvin Gastelum and Marc-Andre Barriault, though a decision loss to Jack Hermansson exposed some limitations. The 29-year-old American carries devastating power in his right hand, dropping Gastelum multiple times and finishing Abus with ground-and-pound after a brutal knockdown. Pyfer's approach is straightforward: low volume, patient, and waiting for the moment to detonate that right hand. He lacks advanced setups for his strikes and tends to stay in the pocket after combinations, leaving him open on the exit. His cardio is questioned, with his volume and ring pressure dropping from the third round onwards, and he's never recorded a finish past the second round.

Israel Adesanya vs Joe Pyfer prediction

This fight will play out like a ticking time bomb. Pyfer's right hand is the most dangerous weapon on the card, and if Izzy has any lapse of focus or judgement early, he could be on the canvas. Imavov finished him with a 1-2, and that's exactly the shot Pyfer will be looking for, only difference is Pyfer throws it with even more destructive intent.

However, Adesanya's technical striking at range should be enough to defuse the threat. Pyfer is a basic striker without advanced setups, and his low volume means he won't be giving Izzy many puzzles to solve. If Izzy fights defensively and uses his movement, Pyfer simply won't have the openings he needs. Against Hermansson, when Jack fought patiently on the backfoot and refused to give Pyfer easy entries, Pyfer was without answer, Izzy's footwork and distance management is levels above Hermansson's.

The key will be to survive the first three rounds. Pyfer has never finished anyone past the second, and while this step up in competition will have pushed him to improve his cardio, his power should diminish as the fight wears on. From the championship rounds onwards, Adesanya's calf kicks will become increasingly available against a tiring Pyfer, and the technical gap should widen. Pyfer is a nightmare matchup on paper for an ageing Adesanya, but the gulf in technical ability is still significant. Unless Pyfer finds that right hand early, Adesanya should pick him apart at range, and potentially even get a finish late.

Prediction: Israel Adesanya to win
