Renato Moicano: "Money" looks to prove that he still has what it takes to hang with the Top 15
A UFC competitor for over a decade, Renato Moicano (20-7-1) has morphed into one of the promotion’s biggest fan favorites after the adoption of his “Money Moicano” persona, popularity that he parlayed into an unlikely short notice title shot against Islam Makhachev at UFC 311. While he’s never been a particularly elite striker, Moicano compensates for his lack of power and speed on the feet with a superb ground game, a state of affairs that has seen him win by finish on the ground against fighters who were favored to TKO him on multiple occasions. After the submission loss to Makhachev snapped a five fight win streak, the Brazilian now enters this match on a two fight skid, most recently dropping an uninspiring decision to Beneil Dariush at UFC 317.
Chris Duncan: Can "The Problem" figure out the Brazilian's game and add to his win streak?
Posting a 6-1 record since joining the promotion in 2023, Chris Duncan (15-2) has exemplified his nickname since a stunning comeback victory over Charlie Campbell during his second appearance on the Contender Series. Known for a near preternatural ability to absorb inhuman amounts of damage and come roaring back to earn the victory, “The Problem” has been on an absolute tear since his sole loss under the UFC banner to Manuel Torres, reeling off a four fight win streak with three submissions and two performance bonuses. Blessed with an iron chin and crazy levels of toughness, the Scot leans on a polished boxing game to find openings where he can snatch up submissions.
Renato Moicano vs Chris Duncan prediction
This is likely to be a solid, all-action fight, but the fact that this is a main event speaks to how badly the UFC appears to be falling off. Duncan is unranked, while Moicano is 36 years old and on a two fight losing streak. Even if the winner scores a KO of the Century contender in the first three seconds, this fight has very few implications for the wider division or the title conversation.
In any case, this one essentially comes down to whether Moicano can wrestle the Scot to the mat and keep him there. “The Problem” is a solid grappler in his own right, but he’s never faced someone with the Brazilian’s credentials on the mat. If Moicano can survive the early onslaught and ground Duncan consistently, he's more than capable of earning a TKO or submission.
However, if he’s unable to get the action to the floor, the Brazilian is likely toast. Moicano has never had an iron chin and it’s shown further signs of deterioration in the latter stages of his career; he seems to get badly hurt in all of his fights, even in the contests where he ends up winning. Duncan has a serious edge in power and durability on the feet, to the point where he’s an easy pick to win a damage based decision or score a TKO if this one stays standing. He’s also got a nasty guillotine in his back pocket, one that could conceivably punish a lazy shot from the Brazilian.
Given how awful Moicano looked against Dariush, I like “The Problem’s” chances here.
Prediction: Chris Duncan to win
