Su Mudaerji: “The Tibetan Eagle” looks to finish what he started

Su Mudaerji (19-7) has become a noticeably different fighter to the one who dropped decisions to Tim Elliott and Charles Johnson. He strung together three straight wins over Mitch Raposo, Kevin Borjas and Jesus Aguilar before the Perez no contest, and the improvement is in the discipline rather than the arsenal. He no longer gets dragged into his opponent’s fight. The wider toolbox is still there – flying knees, wheel kicks, fast kicks off both feet - but his best work comes from sticking to fundamentals at range behind a stiff jab, straight combinations, avoiding and firing low kicks. His takedown defence has improved a lot too.

Alex Perez: The former title challenger is running out of runway

Alex Perez (26-10) has been a fixture around the flyweight rankings for years without ever quite stringing it together. The former title challenger arrived in Macau off a first-round knockout of Charles Johnson at UFC 324 in January, though that followed defeats to Asu Almabayev, Tatsuro Taira and Muhammad Mokaev in his previous four outings. The 34-year-old is a high level wrestler with genuine power, strong leg kicks and a fast step-in straight to close distance. His inside boxing is clean once he has a man on the fence, and he catch boxes well.

The market has flipped completely, and for good reason. Perez was a favourite in Macau, Mudaerji is now a bigger favourite than Perez was back then. They had a close first round but I’d say Mudaerji edged it, he avoided most of Perez’s low kicks while landing plenty of his own, stuffed the takedown comfortably, and generally handled the danger whilst landing the cleaner shots. He got a touch overconfident and shot a takedown he had no need to, Perez rolled through and threatened a guillotine, but he stayed safe and rode it out.

Then the second round came. Mudaerji timed a clean straight from southpaw that put Perez on the canvas, and he began to find his jab range as well. He comes into this rematch with a full read on the distance and doesn’t need to change a thing. Perez is the one who has to solve something, and his blitzes were predictable enough that solving it means rebuilding his pressure game in three months.

The one live route is Mudaerji’s exit from the pocket. He leans back with his chin up and hands down hunting the check hook, and Perez came close with the left hook doing exactly that. A puncher’s chance early, or a sustained fence-boxing clinic is the path. Otherwise Mudaerji defends the takedowns, outclasses him at range with straight shots and kicks, and has a home crowd roaring him through it.
