Xiong Jingnan: "The Panda" seeks to rectify an unsuccessful debut

One of the most celebrated female combatants in ONE Championship history, Jingnan Xiong (19-3) got a rude awakening in her UFC debut. Facing off against veteran, Angela Hill, Xiong was out struck and nearly succumbed to a finish on more than occasion, eventually losing a unanimous decision to “Overkill.” Building her name off an explosive striking game and impressive power for the strawweight division, “The Panda” looks to rediscover the form that saw her storm through a 10-1 run with ONE. However, at the age of 37, questions remain as to how much she has left in the tank.

Julia Polastri: Can "Psycho" earn the biggest win of her career?

A UFC fighter since earning a contract on the Contender Series in 2023, Julia Polastri (14-6) has alternated wins and losses across five fights since making the jump to the big leagues. “Pyscho” is a high volume striker with solid weapons in close range, pushing a frenetic pace while throwing and landing at a high clip. Best known for a head kick KO victory over one time title challenger Karolina Kowalkiewicz, the 28 year old Brazilian was last seen in action against Talita Alencar, dropping a unanimous decision at the Apex in April.

Prior to Xiong’s fight against Angela Hill, you would have had a hard time convincing me that Julia Polastri would be closing as a favorite against one of the most decorated female fighters in ONE Championship history.

I can see the oddsmakers’ rationale here. Xiong is nearly 40 years old and has fought just twice under MMA rules since 2022. She’s had one UFC fight and the unranked Angela Hill absolutely beat the brakes off her in that bout, coming within inches of scoring the stoppage.

However, while Hill may be unranked, she’s still one of the toughest outs in the entire strawweight division. More importantly, she’s one of the sharpest strikers there is at 115 pounds. Polastri’s fights are primarily contested on the feet and while she’s looked impressive in victory, she hasn’t beaten anybody on Hill’s level when it comes to the striking.

If she wants a straight kickboxing fight, Polastri is going to be taking the action exactly where Xiong wants it. I think that she’s going to try and take it to “The Panda” on the feet, and it’s going to end badly for her. Give me Xiong by decision as a slight underdog.

Prediction: Xiong Jingnan to win
