Bilal Hasan: “The IndoNinja” arrives on the shortest of notice

Bilal Hasan (9-0) makes his UFC debut barely two weeks after his last one. The IndoNinja earned his contract on the Contender Series, needing just 45 seconds to dispose of Mridul Saikia. The 25-year-old former Cage Fury flyweight champion has been turned around just in time for Shanghai. Hasan fights from a bladed stance with blistering speed, whipping kicks from both stances and switching within stride. He stomps the knee, kicks to all levels, and holds range with push kicks and stabbing shots to the body. His boxing is sharp and fundamental, rarely more than two shots fired at a time. A very fitting nickname.

Nilson Rojas: “El Rayo” brings a record built on violence

Nilson Rojas (9-0) arrives from Peru with seven of his nine wins coming by knockout or TKO and the other two on the scorecards. The 27-year-old is a boxer rather than a rounded striker, happy to slug in the pocket and invite the clinch to work his knees. His boxing is compact, he defends by slipping and rolling up close, he carries decent power, and he looks durable with a solid gas tank. The concern is his cage awareness, he leaves obvious exits open whenever he pressures forward.

Rojas is outmatched on the feet and the market has priced it accordingly. He does his best work in boxing exchanges, which simply isn’t Hasan’s game, and even if Hasan chooses to box, his is the sharper and more efficient version of it. Rojas is hittable too, he shows moments of clean defence but slipping and rolling in the pocket means he gets tagged whenever opponents frame off and fire, and it’s dangerous against a dynamic striker who will just throw a knee up the middle. He isn’t quick enough to trouble Hasan early, and Hasan is defensively responsible on top of it.

The only crack I see is the quick turnaround. Hasan cut weight two weeks ago and is doing it again now, and his whole game runs on speed. If this reaches the third, or even the back half of the second, the sharpness that makes him special may start to drain, and he doesn’t have the control grappling to ride out the final round. Not from what I’ve seen on tape anyway. Rojas wants a high-pace back and fourth scrap, he’s durable, and he doesn’t just head hunt when he smells blood, he’ll go to the body too. A round three finish for Rojas could genuinely be a miracle play.

That theory still needs Rojas to survive long enough to test it, and that’s the hard part. Hasan’s Contender Series opponent lasted 45 seconds. Expect him to open at full speed and get out before the question is ever asked. Hasan is definitely a prospect to watch out for.
