Lando Vannata: How will "Groovy" look following three years out of the cage?
Lando Vannata (12-7-2), will make his first walk to the cage in almost three years come Saturday night. A bloody war with prime Tony Ferguson in his debut and a KOTY contender spinning wheel kick against John Makdessi in his sophomore appearance had many marking “Groovy” as a prospect to watch when the dynamic striker joined the promotion almost a decade ago; something that has regrettably not come to pass. The flashy Vannata is 3-6-2 since the giddy heights of his early UFC days, with indecision, passivity, and lapses in fight IQ proving to be his downfall on more than one occasion. He’s coming off a decision loss to Daniel Zellhuber, a result that only continues to age poorly with every subsequent “Golden Boy” fumble.
Darrius Flowers: Can "Beast Mode" score his first UFC win at the fourth time of asking?
Winless in three attempts since joining the promotion via the Contender Series back in 2022, you could be forgiven for forgetting that Darrius Flowers (12-8-1) was even on the UFC roster as of 2026. Coming up short against Jake Matthews, Michael Johnson, and Evan Elder in his most recent appearance in 2024, “Beast Mode” is an aggressive striker who likes to march forward behind a high guard and hurl bombs at a frenetic pace. He’s been finished in all but one of his UFC defeats, with six submission losses in his overall career highlighting an Achilles heel should the action hit the mat.
Lando Vannata vs Darrius Flowers prediction
Considering that the promotion is supposed to represent the pinnacle of mixed martial arts, this fight is a damning indictment of the current sorry state of the UFC’s matchmaking. These two men are a combined 3-9-2 under the UFC banner, but fighters like Javid Basharat (15-2, 1 NC) and Jailton Almeida (22-5) are getting their walking papers.
Seriously, who made this fight? Vannata and Flowers have both been on the shelf for an extended period of time, have no hype surrounding them whatsoever, and this match up has absolutely zero bearing on the division that they’re operating in. Even die hard UFC fans had likely forgotten that either man was still even fighting!
While he’s well known for being a notoriously unreliable pick and it’s impossible to know how he’s going to look after three years out, Vannata should win here. If he shows up resembling anything close to the “Groovy" of old, he’s a considerably slicker and more dynamic striker than the plodding Flowers; he can even mix in well-timed takedowns if the stand up exchanges aren’t going his way. At the end of the day, Vannata’s fought and had success against much better levels of competition than “Beast Mode,” a fighter who has yet to prove that he’s UFC caliber.
With that being said, Vannata’s been away for so long that it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if Flowers just randomly bombs him out cold. Who even cares? The thoroughly uninspired pick is “Groovy” by decision.
Prediction: Lando Vannata to win by decision
