Azamat Bekoev: Will "Iron" bounce back after suffering his first loss in the promotion
Former LFA champion Azamat Bekoev (20-4) suffered his first defeat under the UFC banner after beginning life in the promotion with back to back first round stoppages, losing to Yousri Belgaroui by TKO as a considerable favorite. A well-rounded combatant known for his vicious ground and pound, Bekoev boasts an 80% finish rate in victory and hadn’t lost a fight in almost five years prior to running into Belgaroui. The ATT representative was touted as one to watch in the middleweight division following his first two performances, although the manner of his last performance has considerably dampened the hype surrounding him.
Tresean Gore: "Mr Vicious" looks to avoid what would be a third successive defeat
Widely touted as the favorite to win TUF 29, it's been a rough go of things for Tresean Gore (5-4) since bowing out of the reality show's finale with an injury. Enduring multiple fight cancellations, "Mr Vicious" is just 2-4 since, including coughing up his undefeated record and losing to Bryan Battle in the official rematch of the finale in his debut. While he's scored a couple of brutal guillotine finishes along the way, Gore is the one on the wrong end of the stoppage more often than not. He's also coming off a weight miss in his last loss, a decision defeat to Rodolfo Vieira, begging the question as to why the promotion continue to keep him around.
Azamat Bekoev vs Tresean Gore prediction
From the fight itself to its placement this low on the prelims, this is somewhat bemusing matchmaking.
With all due respect, Gore is not a top level MMA talent. Two of his three pro wins prior to appearing on TUF came over debutants and he’s just 2-4 in the promotion since bowing out of the reality show with an injury. His two UFC wins have come over a pair of fighters posting a combined record of 2-8 and he’s been finished in half of his defeats, with one of those stoppages coming at the hands of Cody Brundage(!) in less than a round.
By contrast, Bekoev might be coming off a loss, but he’s still one of the more promising names outside the rankings at 185 pounds, with considerably more experience than Gore despite being the younger fighter. He’s extremely well-rounded and dangerous anywhere the fight takes place, a state of affairs evidenced by sixteen stoppages in twenty victories. Furthermore, his loss to Yousri Belgaroui looks to be one that is likely only going to age well, considering that “The Baby Face Assassin” just put a serious beatdown on the previously undefeated prospect, Mansur Abdul Malik, last weekend.
In short, there’s a reason that Bekoev is as big of a favorite as he is. The pick is “Iron” by first or second round stoppage.
Prediction: Azamat Bekoev to win by stoppage
