Virna Jandiroba: Can "Carcara" kickstart another title run?

Fresh off a close decision loss for the vacant UFC strawweight title to Mackenzie Dern at UFC 321, Virna Jandiroba (22-4) returns looking to prove that she’s still one of the best fighters in the division. While her striking leaves a lot to be desired, the Brazilian compensates for the shortcomings in her standup game with suffocating top control and elite jiu jitsu, something she parlayed into an impressive five fight win streak prior to running into Dern. At 37, “Carcara” is as battle tested as they come at 115 pounds and has never been finished in nearly 30 career outings.

Tabatha Ricci: Will the "Baby Shark" score the biggest win of her career to date?

Posting a 7-3 record since joining the promotion as an undefeated 4-0 prospect, Tabatha Ricci (11-3) returns looking to build on an impressive TKO over Amanda Ribas in her last outing. A high pressure wrestler, “Baby Shark’s” physicality has largely seen her outmuscle and run roughshod over all of her opponents outside of elite level competition throughout her UFC tenure, scoring wins over the likes of Gillian Robertson, Angela Hill. She has only ever lost to solid fighters throughout her UFC tenure, dropping results to Manon Fiorot, Yan Xiaonan, and Loopy Godinez; a list that includes two former title challengers.

Virna Jandiroba vs Tabatha Ricci prediction

Ricci is on a solid little run, but this smacks of the type of fight where she comes up short. Jandiroba might not pose much of a finishing threat, but she’s one of the most experienced and savvy veterans that this weight class has to offer. Not only has “Carcara” faced some of the best fighters in the division, she’s had consistent success against them, scoring wins over two of the three women to already hand “Baby Shark” a loss.

By contrast, Ricci invariably seems to lose any contest where she’s unable to overcome a skill discrepancy with raw physicality. She doesn’t have the striking to exploit Vandiroba’s shortcomings on the feet and while she’s primarily had success in fights where she’s able to win the wrestling exchanges, tangling with a grappler of Vandiroba’s pedigree for extended stretches looks to be a bad idea.

As such, the only path to Ricci appears to be a fluke stoppage; not a promising sign considering that Jandiroba has never been finished. “Carcara” shows levels in all facets of the game across three rounds to walk away with the decision victory.

Prediction: Virna Jandiroba to win by decision
