Abdul-Rakhman Yakhyaev: "The Hunter" returns after a ferocious stoppage victory in his debut
Earning a contract with a brutal KO in exactly thirty seconds on the Contender Series, it only took Abdul Rahman Yakhyaev (8-0) three additional seconds to earn a finish in his UFC debut against Raffael Cerqueira, in one of the most one-sided bouts in recent memory. In a fight befitting of an undefeated prospect with just a single decision win in eight victories, “The Hunter” rocked Cerqueira with a head kick, slammed him, and choked him out with a rear naked choke before the Brazilian even had a chance to register what was happening. As such, expectations are high for the 25 year old Turk’s sophomore appearance.
Brendson Ribeiro: The Brazilian finds himself faced with yet another brutal matchup
Returning following back to back first round TKO defeats to Oumar Sy and Azamat Murzakhanov, respectively, Contender Series alum, Brendson Ribeiro (17-9), could well be looking at his walking papers should he lose for the third time in a row on Saturday night. A reactive counter striker with a 94% finish rate in victory, “The Gorilla” has alternated successive defeats with successive victories throughout his six fight UFC run, with his overall record standing at 2-4. Regrettably, his victories aren’t anything to write home about either; Diyar Nurgozhay is just 1-2 under the UFC banner, while Caio Machado was cut in the wake of three consecutive defeats.
Abdul-Rakhman Yakhyaev vs Brendson Ribeiro prediction
Following in the vein of Iwo Baraniewski vs Austen Lane, this appears to be the UFC’s latest attempt to pit a dangerous prospect against sub-par opposition in the feature fight, using an early highlight reel finish to distract from the poor quality of the overall card.
Much like Yakhyaev’s debut, this looks to be more of a sacrifice than a contest. While it’s hard to put too much stock in “The Hunter’s” first appearance with the promotion considering that Cerqueira was 0-3 with two stoppage losses, Yakhyaev did exactly what elite prospects do to sub-par levels of competition; namely, decimate them without experiencing a second of adversity in the process.
Ribeiro will present a tougher challenge, having scored UFC wins and been in there with better levels of competition, but he’s still showed nothing throughout his promotional run that makes me think he’s about to spring the upset here. It’s not like Yakhyaev even has some glaring hole in his game to exploit in the manner of a Diyar Nurgozhay, a state of affairs evidenced by seven finishes split almost virtually even between KOs and submissions.
In short, it seems exceedingly likely that Yakhyaev wins this in any way that he wants. The Turk hurts and drops Ribeiro badly in the early goings before latching up a submission.
Prediction: Abdul-Rakhman Yakhyaev to win by stoppage
