Bruno Gustavo da Silva: "Bulldog" looks to prove a point in his return after a close loss last time out
One of the more underrated operators at 125 pounds, Bruno Silva (15-8-2, 1 NC) returns aiming to rebound from a close decision loss to Charles Johnson in March. “Bulldog” looked to be charging towards title contention after a disappointing 0-2, 1 NC run to begin his UFC tenure, scoring four stoppages and POTN bonuses in a row. However, he’s hit another rough patch of form as of late, dropping back to back KO losses to Joshua Van and Manel Kape in addition to the loss to aforementioned Johnson. However, he’s still a dangerous fight for anybody in the division, a state of affairs evidenced by a convincing submission victory over Hyun Sung Park prior to his most recent showing.
Edgar Chairez: Can the Mexican finisher score the biggest win of his career?
Poised to make his seventh appearance under the UFC banner, Edgar Chairez (13-6, 1 NC) looks to add to a two fight win streak come Saturday night. A relentless finishing threat with just a single victory by decision, “Puro Chicali” has slightly iffy defense but boasts solid striking nonetheless. He’s also an opportunistic submission artist, boasting eight wins by way of tap out. The Mexican flyweight has finished all but one of his three UFC wins by submission and has only lost to elite levels of competition, dropping decisions to Joshua Van and Tatsuro Taira.
Bruno Gustavo da Silva vs Edgar Chairez prediction
This is a sleeper banger at 125 pounds, pitting two prolific flyweight finishers against each other.
Chairez might not have the prettiest record on paper, but he’s only ever lost to elite level competition throughout his UFC run; his two defeats to date have come against Joshua Van and Tatsuro Taira, the incumbent champion and the latest challenger at 125 pounds. While he has yet to shoot a takedown under the UFC banner, he’s a lethal and opportunistic submission threat should the action hit the mat.
However, Silva looks to be too much for him. Outside of a rough two fight skid to begin his UFC career, “Bulldog’s” only defeats are to Van, Manel Kape, and Charles Johnson, with many arguing that he was unlucky not to get his hand raised against “Inner G” last time out. Moreover, he’s only ever been submitted once, an exhibition loss to Dileno Lopes on The Ultimate Fighter Brazil. He’s also got a power advantage on the feet, in addition to throwing and landing at a slightly higher clip than Chairez typically does, with the option of mixing in takedowns and control time as and when he needs to.
It’s going to be close, but I like Silva’s chances here. “Bulldog” rebounds with a hard fought decision victory to hand Chairez his third UFC loss.
Prediction: Bruno Silva to win by decision
