Jeisla Chaves: Undefeated Brazilian Contender Series winner looking for war
Jeisla Chaves (6-0) earns her UFC debut after a split decision win over Sofia Montenegro on the Contender Series, a bloodbath in which she was dropped and nearly finished before coming back for the decision win. The former ring girl is at her best when she picks her shots, firing single and two piece combos while planting her feet to throw with power. She also has a sharp elbow in the clinch and has showed great toughness to recover from adversity. Chaves’ concern comes from getting a bit too scrappy, leaving herself open defensively.
Yuneisy Duben: Venezuelan knockout artist looking to rebound
Yuneisy Duben (6-1, 1NC) is a striker who has stopped every single opponent she’s beaten, four of those in the first round. She announced herself with a brutal DWCS KO over Shannon Clark, before running into Carli Judice in her debut and being put away with a head kick inside two minutes. The glaring question is her cardio, Duben has never seen the final round of a professional fight excluding her no contest bout. Duben has power, but is slower and less technical, with messy unorganised combinations that rely on arm punches rather than using her whole body.
Jeisla Chaves vs Yuneisy Duben prediction
This one will be settled on the feet, and might actually be a sneaky contender for fight of the night. Chaves is the longer, sharper striker with the more favourable frame for a kickboxing match, and she should be able to work behind her range and pick Duben apart as the Venezuelan marches forward. Duben hits hard when she lands, but her technique is unrefined, she’s also slower and loads up with her arms, and her combinations are sloppy and predictable.
Duben’s path to victory is fairly obvious – hope to land something heavy early and turn it into one of her trademark first-round finishes. She has the pop to do it, and Chaves’ defensive lapses give her a puncher’s chance. However, the longer the fight goes, the worse it gets for Duben. We’ve seen Chaves adapt in adversity, and her chin should be hard enough to eat a few bombs and still come back to win. I see Chaves outclassing Duben at range and even potentially knocking her out.
Prediction: Jeisla Chaves to win by KO/TKO
