Rafael dos Anjos: Can the former champ turn back the clock at 41
Rafael Dos Anjos (32-17) hasn’t fought since October 2024, when his left knee gave way just 90 seconds into his fight with Geoff Neal at UFC 308. Three surgeries followed in quick succession, and the 41-year-old has also admitted that retirement crossed his mind. RDA returns on a three-fight skid, with decision losses to Vicente Luque and Mateusz Gamrot before the Neal stoppage. The southpaw is heavy with outside low kicks and body kicks from his open stance. With age though, he has moved away from volume, instead pressing opponents onto the fence to work his dirty boxing and clinch game. If he gets on top, his elite BJJ and methodical work remains dangerous.
Alexander Hernandez: “The Great Ape” looks to bounce back against a fading legend
Alexander Hernandez (18-9) has had his ups and downs since knocking out Beneil Dariush in 42 seconds on his UFC debut, but he was finally building momentum last year. A four-fight win streak culminated in knockouts of Chase Hooper and Diego Ferreira, before he came up surprisingly short against Rafa Garcia in April. At his best, the 33-year-old is an explosive pressure striker who bounces on his feet, feints well and changes levels constantly, working a high volume of jabs and leg kicks before blitzing in with powerful combinations. That high energy style can see him fade late, and he can get caught entering the pocket wildly.
Who do you think will win at UFC 332?
Open poll and resultsRafael dos Anjos vs Alexander Hernandez prediction
Ring rust is one thing, but RDA is coming back from multiple surgeries and nearly two years out of the cage, and he’s on the wrong side of 40. He’ll also be making 155lbs again, a cut that won’t be kind to a body in this state. For all of that inconsistency, Hernandez is in his physical prime by comparison.
RDA’s modern game is built on pushing opponents onto the fence and scoring rounds with dirty boxing and clinch work, but Hernandez moves around too much to be trapped there easily. Takedowns are RDA’s best route to victory, and if he gets Hernandez down, his BJJ is levels above. However, shooting on a rebuilt knee against a fighter with decent takedown defence is a huge ask, and Hernandez’s leg kicks should only make it harder by chipping away at the base RDA needs to wrestle and move.
The danger for Hernandez is his own recklessness. He swings with little thought for counters when he blitzes into the pocket, and Rafa Garcia showed that walking him down and mixing in takedowns can work. But RDA’s reflexes and chin won’t be what they were, and Hernandez’s speed and power from range should find him long before the veteran can impose himself. I see a Hernandez KO/TKO coming.
Prediction: Alexander Hernandez to win by KO/TKO
