Damian Pinas: Can "The Baba Yaga" score another memorable KO?

Aruba native, Damian Pinas (10-1), looks like he has the makings of the division’s next KO artist. Leaning on some legitimately devastating one-shot power, “The Baba Yaga” has finished all ten of his professional victories inside the distance, earning nine KOs, while his only loss is due to him landing an illegal kick on his opponent. The 24 year old prospect earned a contract on the Contender Series with a stunning highlight reel KO, and has produced back-to-back knockouts in his first two UFC bouts, flatlining Wes Schultz and Cesar Almeida in jaw dropping fashion.

Andrey Pulyaev: Does the Russian veteran have what it takes to score the upset?

1-3 across four fights with the promotion, Contender Series graduate, Andrey Pulyaev (10-5), could well be staring down the barrel of a pink slip with another loss on Saturday night. The towering Russian is a rangy striker with solid kicks, but he’s had a rough go of things in the UFC to date. In fairness, he’s only lost to solid levels of competition, dropping results to Christian Leroy Duncan, Ateba Gautier, and Nursulton Ruziboev, but the fact that he has just a single victory over Nick Klein in that stretch means that his back is up against the wall for this one.

This looks like another brutal KO in the makings for “The Baba Yaga.”

This pick really comes down to the fact that Pinas looks to have otherworldly power. He might not be the most active or technical striker, but when he hits people clean, they crumple like somebody dropped an anvil on them.

Surviving 15 minutes with that kind of fighter is a seriously difficult proposition, particularly in a striker vs. striker matchup. Cesar Almeida, a renowned kickboxer with a win over Alex Pereira, was arguably winning his fight against Pinas on the numbers before getting slumped with the first clean right hand that he absorbed. Pulyaev is elusive and rangy, but I’d argue that he’s less powerful and refined on the feet than Almeida.

The Russian could conceivably have some success if he’s able to test Pinas’ grappling, but considering that he has yet to land a single takedown in four fights with the promotion, I wouldn’t bet on it. He’s a striker first and foremost; if he was willing to engage Ateba Gautier in a straight kickboxing match, I think he’s probably going to do the same again here.

It’s an approach that is going to end badly for him. I see Pulyaev having some early success with his kicks before Pinas finds his range and bombs him with a straight right for the KO.
