Jacobe Smith: An impressive prospect looking to keep the violence rolling
Jacobe Smith (12-0) has wasted no time making his presence felt in the UFC, finishing all three opponents since earning his contract on the Contender Series. He knocked out Preston Parsons in the first round on his debut, submitted Niko Price with a second round rear naked, then flattened Josiah Harrell with brutal ground and pound in February to earn Performance of the Night. The Oklahoma State All-American is a violent, athletic power wrestler who doesn’t settle for control. His striking isn’t technical nor is it fluid, but it’s improving every time we see him in the cage and he carries raw power.
Bruce Whitehead: “The Goose” makes the leap from the regional scene
Bruce Whitehead (8-2) arrives from Fury FC, the same regional promotion where Smith built his record. The 29-year-old enters on a two-fight streak, most recently stopping Ali Abouzalam in under a minute just two weeks before this card. Whitehead has finished five of his eight wins in the first round, but he’s been stopped in both of his losses. He switches stances constantly within his combinations, loves the 3-2 from both sides, and looks to time knees and elbows on his opponent’s entry. His hands aren’t the fastest though, and he can lose composure swinging in the pocket.
Who do you think will win at UFC 332?
Open poll and resultsJacobe Smith vs Bruce Whitehead prediction
This is a set up fight. Smith was supposed to be fighting Kevin Holland, and instead he gets a short-notice debutant whose best work has come against regional opponents.
Whitehead has a bit of everything on the feet, and he fights well when he has time to think. Smith won’t give him that luxury though. Whitehead’s jab and stance switching are tidy at regional level, but he’s been wobbled by fighters with far less power than Smith. When he’s under pressure in the pocket he gets wild and leaves himself open. That won’t go well against a man with two clear paths to a finish – landing a heavy shot on the feet, or dumping him on the ground and finishing him there.
Smith isn’t flawless. His aggression causes him to overextend and leave defensive holes, and he did fade slightly against Price before rallying for the submission in the second. Whitehead comes out at a high pace as well, so he has a puncher’s chance early. However, I don’t think he has the striking ability to consistently punish those openings, and he’s about to step into a completely different world from the one he’s used to. Expect Smith to overwhelm him early.
Prediction: Jacobe Smith to win in round one
