Natalia Silva: Brazil’s elusive striker finally gets her shot at gold

Natalia Silva (20-5-1) finally gets her title shot, though not against the opponent she began her camp preparing for. Undefeated through eight UFC appearances and riding a 14-fight win streak, the Brazilian has outpointed three former champions in a row: Jessica Andrade, Alexa Grasso, and Rose Namajunas. Silva is a taekwondo-based point striker who is constantly bouncing on her feet and moving laterally, using hip feints to sell the kick before exploding in with punches and kicks. She exits as soon as she’s finished throwing, rarely entertains extended exchanges, and has a lightning-fast side kick to the body. If the fight hits the mat, her opportunistic BJJ is dangerous from top and bottom.

Wang Cong: “The Joker” chases the belt and her Shevchenko rematch

Wang Cong (10-1) arrives with one of the more impressive achievements on her resume – a 2015 kickboxing win over Valentina Shevchenko. The decorated Sanda world champion has won four straight in the UFC, all by decision, most recently outpointing Tracy Cortez in July. Her lone defeat came via rear-naked to Gabriella Fernandes. Wang is a heavy, high-output kickboxer, landing 6.82 significant strikes a minute at 58% accuracy, and she’s precise and powerful, with dangerous counter punching. She moves far less than Silva, however and steps in on short notice for her first five-round fight.

Natalia Silva vs Wang Cong prediction

This is a fascinating striking matchup, but it boils down to one question: can Wang kill Silva’s movement? Her calf kicks are her one real edge. If she lands them heavy and early, she takes away the footwork Silva’s entire game is built on, and suddenly Silva can’t bounce out of range as easily. That’s when Wang’s power and counter punching in the pocket can do real damage, potentially enough to finish this one on the feet or grind out a decision.

If she can’t, it’s hard to see a path. Wang will need to time Silva perfectly to catch her, and Silva’s speed, lateral movement and in-and-out blitzes make that incredibly difficult. Silva has also had a full camp training at altitude for a championship fight, while Wang has had around a month to prepare for 25 minutes at Salt Lake City’s high altitude. As the fight drags on, expect Wang to tire faster and get sloppier, giving Silva even more chances to land that side kick to the midsection as Wang comes forward with her boxing entries.

Silva has consistently performed against higher-level opposition, and her grappling offers a sneaky second route here. A clinch and an outside trip could expose the positional lapses Gabriella Fernandes exploited, opening the door to a scramble submission. Either way, back Silva to take over early, outland Wang from range, and leave with the belt.

Prediction: Natalia Silva to win
