Imanol Rodriguez: Does the Mexican prospect earn another memorable finish?
Undefeated across seven fights as a professional, not withstanding exhibition results, Imanol Rodriguez (7-0) returns for his first fight since a crazy comeback victory over Kevin Borjas, surviving an early knockdown to rally and stop “El Gallo Negro” in the second round to earn a performance bonus. The Mexican prospect made his way to the UFC via the Contender Series after coming up short to eventual winner, Joseph Morales, in his attempt to win TUF 33. An aggressive, fast-twitch striker who particularly excels when throwing sharp, compact boxing combinations, “Himan” is also known for his ferocious uppercuts.
Alden Coria: The 4 oz Fight Club prospect looks to push his UFC record to 4-0
4 oz Fight Club representative and training partner to current flyweight kingpin, Joshua Van, Alden Coria (13-3, 1NC), has put together an undefeated run across three fights in the promotion. A slick counter striker with superb boxing and solid grappling, Coria stopped Alessandro Costa in a huge upset in his debut, before following that win up with decisions over Luis Gurule and Stewart Nicoll. The latter result dampened some of the American’s hype, with Nicoll taking him to a hard fought decision in a bout he was expected to finish, but Coria remains one of the more highly regarded prospects at 125 pounds.
Who do you think will win at UFC 332?
Open poll and resultsImanol Rodriguez vs Alden Coria prediction
This is an absolute banger between two of the flyweight division’s more exciting unranked prospects. Both of these men look like they have what it takes to be staples of the division’s Top 10 for many years to come.
While he’s currently a slight underdog, I’m leaning towards Coria here. Rodriguez looks to be slightly better on the feet, but the American is no slouch in terms of the striking. He also has a significant height and reach advantage over “Himan,” something that could play a key factor in deciding this one.
Coria has also been considerably more active and has more UFC cage time under his belt; I put a lot more stock in a stoppage over Alessandro Costa than I do in a finish over Kevin Borjas. The 4 oz Fight Club prospect has also demonstrated some solid grappling chops during his time in the promotion, while Rodriguez has yet to really show what he can do on the ground.
If this is a pure kickboxing fight, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Rodriguez get the nod from the judges based on damage. However, I believe that Coria is going to mix the martial arts more fluidly across three rounds, leaning on his size advantage to win a 29-28 decision.
Prediction: Alden Coria to win by decision
