Johnny Walker: Can the goofy Brazilian begin his heavyweight tenure with a win?
Johnny Walker (22-10, 1NC) makes his heavyweight debut following a sixteen fight stint at 205 pounds where he went 8-7 with 1NC against some of the finest fighters in the weight class. The towering Brazilian was initially known as one of the wildest fighters in the upper weight classes, a heavy-hitting striker with a penchant for flashy, dynamic techniques. However, Walker’s durability proved to be an Achilles heel against the upper echelon of the division, a state of affairs that resulted in several harrowing KO losses. He’s coming off a lackluster decision loss to Dominick Reyes, in a bout that was decried by many for the pair’s lack of activity.
Mick Parkin: The TFT poster boy looks for the biggest win of his career
4-1 across five fights with the UFC, Contender Series graduate, Mick Parkin (10-1) coughed up his undefeated record in his last fight, coming out on the wrong end of a decision against Marcin Tybura where many argued he did enough to secure the win. Prior to that loss, the TFT representative was riding a four fight win streak, punctuated with his first stoppage under the UFC banner over Lukasz Brzeski. A methodical, technical striker, Parkin’s grappling base combined with his solid stand up means that he’s one of the more well-rounded talents in the heavyweight division.
Who do you think will win at UFC 332?
Open poll and resultsJohnny Walker vs Mick Parkin prediction
I really want to pick Parkin here. The TFT standout is patient, well-rounded, and has some underrated pop in his hands. Walker has taken an insane amount of damage across his career and has been chinned on multiple occasions by fighters from a lower weight class; there’s a solid chance that his chin simply does not survive against heavyweight firepower.
However, I’m reluctantly leaning towards Walker here. Yes, he’s been KO’d brutally on multiple occasions, but he’s also been in there with some of the best fighters in the light heavyweight division. All of Parkin’s wins in the promotion have come against bottom of the barrel heavyweights, with his sole step up in competition ending in a decision loss to Marcin Tybura. His only KO in the UFC came against Lukasz Brzeski, a fighter who washed out of the promotion at 1-6 with four stoppage losses.
Moreover, Parkin has yet to face a fighter with Walker’s KO power, meaning that we don’t know how his chin will fare until fight night. One of the biggest light heavyweights in recent memory, Walker is also a perfect physical fit for heavyweight on paper, a state of affairs underlined by a 2” height and 3” reach advantage heading into this one.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Brazilian’s chin does not hold up and Parker just folds him early, but I can’t escape the sensation that Walker is going to land something ridiculous in the early goings and follow up for the finish. The reluctant pick is Walker by KO.
Prediction: Johnny Walker to win by KO
