Court McGee: “The Crusher” bows out in front of his home crowd

Court McGee’s (22-14) career began with winning season 11 of The Ultimate Fighter and includes a split decision win over a young Robert Whittaker. The 41-year-old has only won one of his last five, submitting Tim Means in the first round in this same city before dropping a clear decision to Michael Chiesa last June. McGee is a pressure wrestler who throws basic boxing combinations at decent volume to back opponents onto the fence, where he grinds in the clinch and chains his takedowns. Durability and pace have carried him for years, but that engine is fading.

Eric Nolan: “Night Time” fighting for his UFC future

Eric Nolan (8-5) is still searching for his first UFC win, but he looks a far better fighter than his record suggests. The former CFFC champion took his debut on short notice at middleweight against Baisangur Susurkaev, hurting him on the feet and arguably banking the first round before being caught by a second-round rear naked. Back at welterweight in June, Farman Hasanov grounded him 17 times in a 30-27 sweep, but Nolan never stopped working back up to his feet. The 28-year-old is a crafty boxer who picks his shots well and mixes in leg kicks and teeps at range, though he lacks proper power. At 0-2 in the UFC, this is a must win.

Court McGee vs Eric Nolan prediction

On paper, this could be a favourable send off – a retirement fight in front of a Utah crowd that has watched McGee go 11-1 in his home state. However, the McGee walking out on Saturday isn’t the one who built that record. He’s 41, won one of his last five, and he couldn’t get past Michael Chiesa, Chiesa isn’t the most polished striker on the feet.

McGee’s game relies on backing opponents onto the fence with fundamental boxing combinations, and then dragging them into the dirty boxing and chain wrestling that have carried his career. McGee’s entries are basic and Nolan is the sharper boxer, his counters should be able to find a home. His leg kicks and body teeps also let him score at range without having to trade in the pocket. Nolan has a habit of shelling up behind his guard against combinations, but McGee doesn’t have the power to keep him there.

The wrestling is McGee’s clearest path, and Nolan struggled against Hasanov. But McGee hasn’t really ever had a powerful takedown shot, he relies mostly on volume and chaining them. He also isn’t anywhere near as explosive as Hasanov who set the welterweight record for takedowns in a round, the level of wrestling is different here. Nolan kept getting back up in that fight, so it’s hard to see a 41-year-old McGee pinning him there. Expect Nolan to outland McGee over three rounds and spoil the retirement party.

Prediction: Eric Nolan to win
