Deiveson Figueiredo: Has the man who was once every flyweight’s worst nightmare got anything left at 135?
Deiveson Figueiredo (25-7-1) is a two-time flyweight champion, but his run at bantamweight has turned sour. After an encouraging start that included wins over Rob Font, Cody Garbrandt and Marlon Vera, the 38-year-old has lost four of his last five, beaten by Petr Yan, Cory Sandhagen and Umar Nurmagomedov before being submitted by Song Yadong in May. Nowadays, Figgy is a calculated counter puncher who throws with low volume but maximum leverage and power when he lets his hands go. He has a sturdy chin, slips punches well and still times takedowns nicely, with slick BJJ transitions and fast submissions once it hits the mat.
Payton Talbott: Bantamweight’s big man on the rise
Payton Talbott (11-1) silenced plenty of doubters in December. Written off as a one-dimensional striker after Raoni Barcelos took him down multiple times to hand him his first loss, he responded with a dominant 30-27 shutout of Henry Cejudo. He dropped the Olympic gold medallist, landed takedowns, and stuffed most of Cejudo’s attempts. Huge for the division, Talbott is a creative, composed and powerful striker who likes to walk opponents down, switching stances seamlessly and mixing shots to the head and body with a dynamic arsenal. His wrestling is evolving rapidly, and his takedown defence has come on leaps and bounds.
Who do you think will win at UFC 332?
Open poll and resultsDeiveson Figueiredo vs Payton Talbott prediction
Figgy’s recent numbers tell the story. He landed just nine significant strikes before being submitted by Song, and only eight across 15 minutes against Umar. That low volume is a huge problem against a fighter as active and powerful as Talbott, handing him all the time in the world to work his game on the feet. Figgy did outpoint the much bigger Montel Jackson last October, so size alone won’t beat him, but Talbott is younger, stronger, and far more dangerous standing at this stage of their careers. Figgy’s counters will struggle to find a home against that long, rangy frame.
Figgy’s clearest path is the takedowns. If he gets this to the mat, his BJJ is good enough to transition into dominant positions and put real work on Talbott, and he throws up submissions fast in scrambles. But shooting naked on a bigger man with rapidly improving wrestling is risky business, as Song showed by guillotining him off a shot in May. Figgy’s best hope is timing one mid-exchange, likely later in the fight once Talbott tires, but he’s unlikely to push a high enough pace to drain Talbott’s tank. Expect Talbott to keep this standing, walk Figgy down, and eventually break the ageing Brazilian.
Talbott is very creative on the feet and extremely composed, he switches stances well and has a great shot selection. I just think the dynamic arsenal of weapons will be too much for Figgy to deal with. Talbott is a lock.
Prediction: Payton Talbott to win by KO/TKO
