Tottenham Hotspur head into their second game of the 2025/26 campaign as they take on Burnley on the opening day of the Premier League season in north London.

Tottenham preview: New era for Spurs

Having finally ended their trophy drought by winning the UEFA Europa League and thus qualifying for the UEFA Champions League last season, Tottenham Hotspur still took the decision to part company with manager Ange Postecoglou.

That is a completely reasonable decision, though, after Spurs somehow finished 17th in the Premier League. Postecoglou has been replaced by Thomas Frank, formerly of Brentford, as pretty much any domestic performance is now an improvement.

Burnley preview: Stubborn Clarets

Burnley have gained promotion back to the Premier League once again, this time under the management of Scott Parker. The Clarets had a staggeringly impressive defensive record in the Championship last season, but things are already very different.

Of that defence, the key man, goalkeeper James Trafford, has left for Manchester City, whilst crucial centre-back CJ Egan-Riley has joined Olympique de Marseille, with Burnley having brought in an almost ridiculous amount of players once again.

Tottenham team news: Likely to change system

After playing a back three in the UEFA Super Cup against PSG, Spurs are likely to revert to a more attacking system for the visit of Burnley.

Dejan Kulusevski remains sidelined for the hosts, whilst England international James Maddison is sidelined with a potentially season-ending ACL injury sustained in pre-season.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Spence; Sarr, Bentancur; Odobert, Bergvall, Kudus; Solanke

Unavailable: Dragusin (Injured), Takai (Injured), Udogie (Injured), Bissouma (Injured), Maddison (Injured), Kulusevski (Injured), Gil (Injured)

Questionable: Solomon (Injured)

Burnley team news: Switching their own system

In his pre-match press conference, Scott Parker has confirmed that both Bashir Humphreys and Zeki Amdouni are missing through injury.

There is an expectation that the Clarets switch to a back three for this weekend, with Kyle Walker slotting in on the right-hand side of the back-three.

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Dubravka; Walker, Esteve, Ekdal; Sonne, Mejbri, Cullen, Ugochukwu, Hartman; Foster, Tchaouna

Unavailable: Beyer (Injured), Humphreys (Injured), Benson (Injured), Amdouni (Injured)

Questionable: Dubravka (Injured), Roberts (Fitness), Flemming (Injured)

Tottenham vs Burnley prediction

Tottenham Hotspur had a 2-0 lead over Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup in Friuli in midweek, but succumbed to a 2-2 draw. They then had a 2-0 lead in the penalty shootout, but also went on to lose that. Thomas Frank’s spell could have begun with silverware, but ends in people bringing up the Spurs-y cliché. Burnley and former Spurs midfielder Scott Parker will set up to be very defensive and difficult to play against. Spurs may lack a bit of fluency in the final third. They remain favourites for this one, but it may not be a hammering.

Tottenham vs Burnley tip: Tottenham to win & under 3.5 goals
