The Russian teenager made a mockery of the American’s previously solid form with a resounding 6-2 6-2 success.
The world number 90 now takes on fellow 19-year-old Tereza Valentova for the first time on the WTA Tour after the Czech seventh seed claimed Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-3 6-2.
It was Korneeva who came out on top in their maiden tussle at a lower level, when she claimed a 7-5 3-6 6-0 win at the Australian Open Girls’ tournament back in 2023.
Valentova is inside the top 50 now and looks to have made greater strides of late. That said, the nature of Korneeva’s win over Li must not be ignored and it may go three, although we still side with Tereza.
