World number 83 Taylor Townsend came back from a set down to oust Fernanda Contreras on Tuesday but she should be better for an early scare here in Austin. The 27-year-old is a popular player on home soil but she has struggled to find enough rhythm to make the most of her clear talents in these conditions, with a run to the third round of the US Open last summer her best recent effort. World number 68 Yue Yuan also came back from a set down in her opening match to beat Arina Rodionova on Monday, avenging a defeat to the Aussie at the same stage of the Hua Hin Championships last month. The 25-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Hobart International earlier last month, upsetting the likes of Sloane Stephens, Xinyu Wang and Yulia Putintseva before defeat to eventual champion Emma Navarro, but Monday’s win snapped a three-match losing streak since.
