THE PREDICTION

World number 49 Elisabetta Cocciaretto is the eighth seed at the Monterrey Open and she got her campaign underway well with a solid straight-sets victory over Marina Bassols Ribera on Tuesday. The 22-year-old finished runner-up to Lauren Davis at the Hobart International back in January in her maiden tour final and there is no reason why she cannot emulate that here at a similar level in Monterrey. World number 73 Tatjana Maria looks a tough test, though, after she ousted her first Italian opponent Lucia Bronzetti to the tune of just one game conceded. The 35-year-old is always a tricky customer on tour, especially at this level, and three sets seem likelier than two in this first meeting. Back Cocciaretto to earn at least one of them and leave the victor up to chance.
