World number 47 Tatjana Maria rode her luck on Tuesday when Leylah Fernandez was forced to retire injured after winning the first set of their first round match. 36-year-old Maria has failed to win back-to-back matches on tour since reaching the Guangzhou Open quarter-finals last September but she certainly has the experience to make the most of her opportunity here in San Diego. World number 148 Daria Saville is yet to drop a set this week after coming through qualifying handily before a strong win over Lin Zhu on Tuesday. The 29-year-old also beat Zhu en-route to the semi-finals of the Hobart International last month for some encouraging form after struggling to come back from injury last summer and she is probably better-suited to the conditions here in California. Back the Aussie to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
