THE PREDICTION
Former world number four Kei Nishikori makes a surprise return to the tour to play his first match since a run to the quarter-finals at the Atlanta Open last July. The 34-year-old began his latest comeback from injury with a win at the Palmas del Mar Challenger in June but the Japanese has not been a permanent fixture on tour since late 2021, suggesting a proper resurgence is unlikely to ever come to fruition. Nishikori will be a popular draw for Miami crowds all the same on Thursday as a former finalist here in 2016 but world number 40 Sebastian Ofner is a solid opponent who will not struggle to play his game under the added attention. However, 27-year-old Ofner has struggled to find any rhythm so far this season and he will be eagerly anticipating a return to his favoured clay next month, on which he reached the round of 16 at Roland-Garros last summer. Back Nishikori to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
